Barker Behaviour and Training Miriam Ahrens, owner and head trainer has been involved in Dog Training, competing, Showing and Breeding for over 25 years.

Barker Behaviour and Training is Force Free, Positive Dog and Animal Training helping owners with the skills to shape their family pet into a happy, well adjusted, life long companion. Barker Behaviour and Training is Fear Free, Positive dog and animal training aiming to provide owners with the skills to shape their family pet into a happy, well adjusted, life long companion. Recently completing the Karen Pryor Dog Trainer Professional and as a member of the Karen Pryor and Absolute Dogs Training Academies, Miriam brings a variety of both positive reinforcement, clicker and games based teaching methods to Barker Behaviour and Training. Miriam is supported by Sue Arwen who is currently competing in Obedience, Agility and show with her dogs and is undertaking a Certificate IV in Animal Companion through the Delta Institute and the Absolute Dogs Pro Trainer course. There are strong links to Mt Barker Veterinary Clinic and the program has the support of Dr Digby Ambrose through his Veterinary Behaviour practice.

Could your dog find the end of a cotton tip outside in all the leaves? I think they could! No matter the breed, all dogs can do scent work. We can show you how to train your dog to find an odour and alert you.

Our Search 'N' Sniff course is perfect for any dog at any ability level, as long as they are over 6 months old! Sniffing is a dog's strongest sense; it can help them relax, and in this course, it gives them a chance to problem-solve.

This course promotes confidence and independence in your dog; it also has a helpful side effect of wearing out your dog without lots of physical exercise, meaning it's perfect for dogs with mobility issues, or maybe you just have a hyperactive hound ready for a new challange.

Come join us for some puppy primary school, where our certified trainers help you and your pup learn some helpful skills, such as loose-lead walking, recall, polite greetings, and much more!

One of the ways in which we teach this is through games, because we want to make it fun for your dogs while they learn. We include a game each session that helps solidify the skills that they learn each week.

Do you have a Puppy aged between 8 – 14 weeks of age? Come join us this evening Wednesday at 6.30pm for our fun Puppy Preschool run by a certified trainer in our dedicated training area. Our course is 1 hour x 4 weeks and starting that all important socialisation as soon as possible gives your puppy the best start. To join puppies only need to have had their first Vaccination which is usually given at 6 – 7 weeks of age. We provide Vet approved information on toilet training, socialisation, bite-inhibition, feeding, positive training, grooming and much more! So true, our animals are always trying to communicate their needs and feelings with us, we just have to listen, even if it is not always the message you want you dog to tell you.

How awesome are these two lovely pups playing so well together. Great to see Gunther (Mini Dachshund) getting so confident, just look at his wagging tail, and Dash (Border Collie) modifying his play and being so gentle. Had a fun Puppy Preschool class on Wednesday night where we discussed dental health, parasites and practised our training including recalls. Then we did a Vet clinic tour so the pups could practice a positive visit, getting weighted and examined with treats of course, and see what happens behind the scenes. If you have a new puppy aged between 8 – 14 weeks of age we have a new class starting on Sunday morning at 9am with a couple places free. Another fantastic week with the agility class. This week's focus is on switching hands so that the handlers remain on the inside of the course and the dogs can get used to being on both sides. They all continue to step up to the challenge, with Willow and Frankie (and their handlers) showing us how it's done!

Another fun day with agility! This week, we added in the tyre and a moving see-saw as demonstrated beautifully by Pumkin. We are also still sharpening skills such as jumps and the weave. It has been so fun so far, can't wait to keep building these skills!
