Aiofe (which is Irish for beauty), Louisa and her calf Lotus are three British White bovine patients we have seen this week.
British White cattle are considered a rare breed and are one of the oldest breeds of cattle native to Britain.
After being coaxed into the yards with lucerne hay, they received their vaccinations, lice treatment and were tested for worms and liver fluke.
Aoife is due to calve in the next two months so this gorgeous family will be expanding soon.

With their gorgeous red coats, intelligence and loyal nature, Lexie and Luca are beautiful examples of the Australian Kelpie breed.

Today, Lexie accompanied Luca on his first visit to meet the veterinary team, and both dogs received their vaccinations.

It was lovely to see them supporting each other through the experience 🤎

Traditionally bred for herding livestock, Kelpies are renowned for their energy, agility and strong work ethic—but it’s their devotion and loving nature that make them such special companions.

🐾 Veterinary Nurse Appreciation Day 💚
Today we’re celebrating the incredible nursing team at SHVC, led by our wonderful Head Nurse Jodie.
These are the people behind the anaesthetics, hospital patients, nervous pets, comforting cuddles, difficult phone calls and countless little things that keep our hospital running every day.
💚 Sarah — our powerhouse 2IC, an incredibly skilled nurse who never hesitates to support the team or go above and beyond for our patients.
💚 Matilda — a calm, capable senior nurse who is brilliant under pressure, an amazing communicator and someone we can always rely on.
💚 Claudia — a bright, enthusiastic nurse whose skills and confidence have grown enormously. Her energy makes the hard days easier.
💚 Gabby — always finding the next job, helping reception or giving extra care to her hospital patients. Her kindness and empathy shine through.
💚 Hannah — our newest nurse celebrating her first appreciation day! Hardworking, eager to learn and wonderfully patient with nervous and reactive dogs.
💚 Olivia — a confident, capable nurse who continues to bring knowledge and initiative to our team while studying human nursing.
💚 Josie — one of our longest-serving nurses, brilliant on the nursing floor and reception, always ready to help, teach and welcome new faces.
💚 Mads — a curious nurse with incredible scientific knowledge, a love of learning and a special compassion for our wildlife patients.
💚 Alice — a familiar face after years of nursing and reception at SHVC. An incredibly knowledgeable senior nurse who always supports the team and shares her expertise.
And Jodie, our knowledgeable and patient Head Nurse, keeping this talented, slightly chaotic group moving in the same direction. ❤️
We are incredibly proud of the work ethic, knowledge, compassion, humour and heart this team brings to SHVC.
Happy Veterinary Nurse Appreciation Day to our beautiful nurses — we’d be lost without you. 🐾💚

We had a wonderful day at the Dog’s Day Out with Wingecarribee Animal Shelter and Fowas Charity in Corbett Gardens, part of Bowral’s beautiful Tulip Time Flower Festival.

Our own Dr Charlie Carter joined the day to give a veterinary talk about avian influenza, explaining what the virus is, why awareness is important, and some practical ways we can help protect our pets and local birdlife.

Charlie also shared something very close to our hearts at Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre.. wildlife care. 🦅

He spoke about the many injured and sick native animals that come through our doors, the challenges involved in treating wildlife, and some of the incredible success stories we’ve been lucky enough to be part of over the years.

All wildlife presented to SHVC is treated pro bono, and while not every story has the ending we hope for, there are some very special moments, particularly when an animal we’ve cared for is strong enough to be released back where it belongs. 🌿

It was lovely to see so many dogs (and their humans!) enjoying Corbett Gardens amongst the tulips, and to be part of a community event that celebrates our pets, wildlife and beautiful Southern Highlands. 🐶🌷🦅

This gorgeous little ginger fluff ball is Mindy Loue🧡, a 13-week-old Persian kitten who came in to see Dr Mathilda for a health check and worming before heading off to enjoy her new home.

She has the sweetest nature and, despite that rather serious little face, possibly the loudest purr we’ve ever heard! 🧡🧡

Mindy Loue also happened to visit on Mathilda’s birthday, a pretty lovely birthday bonus for a vet who was more than happy to have some kitten cuddles. 🧡

Dr Charlie Carter recently spoke with ABC Illawarra about the recovery and release of a Boobook owl treated here at Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre.
Sadly, many birds of prey affected by second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) don’t survive in the wild, so seeing this little owl recover and return where it belongs was incredibly special for our team.
Charlie also spoke about the devastating flow-on effects these poisons can have on our native predators, which can become poisoned simply by eating affected rodents.
We’re incredibly grateful to WIRES and our diagnostic partners for the support that helps make outcomes like this possible.
All wildlife care at Southern Highlands Veterinary Centre is provided pro bono. Our team has extensive experience and training in wildlife care, and we give our time, skills and resources freely because we are genuinely passionate about protecting and giving the best possible care to Australia’s incredible native wildlife. 🦉

Aladdin and Mustafa are two camels we recently saw. Mustafa had weight loss and diarrhoea.
When we performed a worm test by looking at a faecal sample under the microscope (photos 4 and 5), we found whipworm and strongyle worm eggs.
Whipworm eggs are particularly concerning as they can be rapidly fatal in camels. And so we drenched both of them orally using a drench gun (which was no mean feat!)
When we rechecked the faecal samples a few weeks later there was no sign of any worms.
Regularly checking sheep, goats, alpacas, cattle and camels for worms is very important particular in the cooler, wetter climate of the Southern Highlands

These little blue wrens visit the window of Consult One most days 💙

The male is especially fascinated by his reflection and very determined not to let the female have a turn.

They make us smile, and sometimes these small moments mean more than you’d think.

There has been a lot of conversation about mental health in the veterinary profession lately in the media, and it matters.

We are very fortunate to do work we love, but veterinary medicine also asks a lot of its people.

Our patients can’t tell us where it hurts. We work across many species, often in urgent, time-sensitive situations.

We also meet people who are frightened, grieving, or carrying burdens we can’t see. Sometimes their animal is their only constant.

We carry that with us.

In a single day we might welcome a new puppy, nurse a critically ill patient, deliver a difficult diagnosis, and say goodbye to a long-loved companion, then open the door to the next patient…

There are also financial realities. Veterinary care has no Medicare, and providing it involves highly trained staff, specialised equipment and significant running costs.

Our vets spend years at university and continue learning throughout their careers. Our nurses dedicate years to their training too, developing the knowledge and skills needed to care for patients through every stage of their lives.

They do it because they care deeply.

But caring deeply doesn’t make anyone limitless.

We will always do our best, but sometimes it still won’t be enough. Unfortunately that is the cost of working in veterinary care. .

That hurts us too.

We’re not asking for sympathy — just for kindness and understanding toward the people behind the scrubs, consult room doors and phones.

Kindness matters. Patience matters. Respect matters.

And your animals matter enormously to us.

And sometimes… between the emergencies, the difficult decisions and the goodbyes, a tiny blue wren tapping at the window of Consult One is exactly the reminder we need of why we do what we do. 💙
