Racetrack Veterinary Services

Racetrack Veterinary Services Racetrack Veterinary Services is an Equine Veterinary Practice based in Mornington covering the Mornington Peninsula, Pakenham and Greater Melbourne area.

Racetrack Veterinary Services is an Equine Veterinary Practice founded by Dr Eoin Kelly, MVB MRCVS in 2014. Based in Mornington, the practice also covers the greater Melbourne area. Dr Eoin Kelly MVB MRCVS grew up on the family farm at St John's Point, Co Down in Northern Ireland. Eoin developed an interest in horses and racing from a young age and worked in the racing industry in Ireland before a

nd during his time at university. Having graduated from the Veterinary College of Ireland at University College Dublin in 2004, Eoin was selected onto the Darley Flying Start Bloodstock Management training program and spent the subsequent two years working with and learning from some of the greatest thoroughbred industry leaders around the world. Time spent with trainers such as Bobby Frankel and John Shirreffs in the USA, Mike de K**k in Dubai and David Hayes at Lindsay Park in Angaston, South Australia gave him an invaluable wealth of knowledge. During the programme Eoin also spent a period of time working at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park racetracks in Los Angeles with popular American racetrack veterinarian Dr. Jeff Blea DVM (current president of the American Association of Equine Practitioners). In 2006 Eoin returned to Ireland to work for renowned racehorse trainer Jim Bolger in Co.Carlow as Veterinarian/Assistant. During his time there Eoin worked directly with the champions Teofilo, New Approach and Finsceal Beo along with a host of other Group 1 winners and other top class horses. With over 200 horses in the stable and an in-house blood-testing laboratory the vet’s role was a busy one! During this time Eoin was also actively involved with yearling selection at the sales (where purchases included New Approach). A stint in the UK as assistant trainer to Kevin Ryan, a renowned trainer of 2yos and sprinters (120 horse stable) followed before Eoin made the move to Australia in early 2009 to take up a racetrack Veterinarian role at Flemington with The Racetrack Practice. Clients at Flemington included Brian Mayfield-Smith and David Hayes, two of the most successful trainers in Australian Racing history. The following year Eoin relocated to the Mornington Peninsula and has built up an extensive client base in the area including racehorse trainers and pre-trainers, event and dressage riders and agistment farms. After five successful years with The Racetrack Practice Eoin founded Racetrack Veterinary Services in 2014 with the help of his partner Caitrin.

🐎 FUN FACT FRIDAY 🐎

Did you know the brand Ariat was actually named after the legendary racehorse Secretariat?

The name “Ariat” is inspired by Secretariat — the iconic Triple Crown winner whose speed, power and performance changed racing history forever.

🏆 KENTUCKY DERBY

🏆 PREAKNESS STAKES

🏆 BELMONT STAKES

Pretty fitting that the team at Racetrack Veterinary Services wear Ariat uniforms every day while working with elite equine athletes!

Last night at the ETBA Industry Awards held at Flemington Racecourse, Racetrack Veterinary Services was named a Finalist in the 2026 Equine Business Summit’s Community Impact Award category.

Although we didn’t win, this recognition means so much to our team because community has always been at the heart of what we do. From supporting horse owners, trainers, breeders and riders across the Mornington Peninsula, to providing trusted veterinary care at racetracks, events, clinics and farms, we have always believed that strong communities are built through connection, education and support.

Over the years, we have been proud to contribute to our local equine community through:
• Providing ongoing veterinary support for horses and horse owners across multiple disciplines
• Sponsoring strappers lunch packs at Mornington Racecourse meetings
• Sponsoring strappers prizes and recognising the hardworking people behind the scenes of racing
• Delivering educational talks and information sessions for local Adult Rider Clubs, Pony Clubs and equestrian groups
• Playing a role in the educational component of the OTT Carnival, helping educate owners and riders on horse health, welfare and care for their Off The Track Thoroughbreds
• Supporting local events, charities and equestrian initiatives
• Creating accessible educational content to improve horse health and welfare across our community
• Building strong relationships within both the racing and wider equestrian industries

To be recognised alongside such incredible finalists, The Victorian Wakeful Club and Equestrian Hub, is a real honour. Congratulations to both organisations for the amazing work you do within the equestrian industry.

A huge thank you to the Equine Business & Trades Association (EBTA) and the Equine Business Summit organisers for recognising the importance of community within our industry, and to Duncan Equine Group for sponsoring this award category.

Most importantly, thank you to our clients, community, staff and supporters who trust us with the care of your horses every day. Your support is what allows us to continue doing what we love.

We are very proud to represent the Mornington Peninsula equine community on a national stage.

- CASE OF THE WEEK -

Splint Injury in a Young Racehorse

The following case of the week was presented to us in a routine examination the day after the horse ran a disappointing race. The 3-year old gelding had won a few good races in the past but currently his performance was only moderate.

The gelding trotted up sound and did not show any lameness after flexing both front fetlock joints. However we did find a very painful splint on the inside of his right front limb and the horse trotted up lame after manipulating the painful area.

Radiographs of the right front cannon bone area revealed a healthy and unaffected lateral (on the outside of the leg) splint bone, shown in the first image.

An x-ray on the medial side (inside) of the cannon bone shows a very enlarged splint bone, shown in the second image.

The contour of the enlarged area is also very rough in appearance, caused by the formation of osteophytes which are actively forming new bone, shown in the third image.

This process causes pain in varying degrees, which explains why the horse has not been performing up to expectations. The gelding will now, after being treated, enjoy a well-deserved rest in a paddock for a few weeks to let this process settle down.

As the temperatures start to drop, it’s time to think carefully about rugging your horses.

Not every horse needs the same level of warmth. Factors such as age, workload, body condition, coat length and access to shelter all play an important role in deciding what’s best.

A few things to keep in mind this season:

▫️ Avoid over-rugging — horses can overheat even in cooler weather

▫️ Check rugs daily for rubbing, slipping or damage

▫️ Make sure rugs stay dry and clean

▫️ Older horses, clipped horses and young foals may need extra protection

▫️ If your horse is sweating under their rug, it may be too heavy

A comfortable horse is a healthier horse and regular checks can help prevent skin issues, weight loss and discomfort during the colder months.

If you’re unsure what rugging approach is best for your horse this winter, the team at Racetrack Veterinary Services is always happy to help.

𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗼 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸

We feel incredibly humbled to lead Boneo Park into its next chapter.

Our focus remains clear — delivering world-class events, championing horse welfare, growing the sport and ensuring we preserve the beautiful 700 acres of nature and wildlife.

Central to this is our ongoing commitment to exceptional arena surfaces and facilities, to ensure horses and riders can perform, and are cared for, at their best.

In the coming months, we will commence a series of upgrades to enhance comfort and convenience for riders, horses, and spectators, alongside investment in event infrastructure and the natural landscape.

However, we are mindful of the current economic climate, and while we are investing back into Boneo Park, we will not be increasing our prices.

We are also working on exciting plans for the future; strengthening our events, creating more opportunities for high-performance and next-gen riders, and evolving the property as a destination for more people to experience.

We look forward to seeing you at Boneo Park — please come and say hello!
