We’re Hiring: Part-Time Practice Manager

Racetrack Veterinary Services is looking for an experienced, motivated Practice Manager to join our small team in Mornington.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys taking ownership, keeping things organised and helping a team work at its best.

You’ll be involved in:
• Staff rostering and team support
• Day-to-day practice operations
• Monitoring expenses, revenue and profitability
• Improving systems and efficiency
• Helping us continually improve the client experience

We’re looking for someone with a strong work ethic, excellent organisational and communication skills, plenty of initiative and a practical approach to problem-solving.

Previous experience in practice management, team leadership or a similar operational role would be highly regarded.

Behind every diagnosis is a horse that needs to be understood.

Arthritis in horses isn’t always obvious. Sometimes the signs are subtle — a change in movement, stiffness, reduced performance, or simply that something doesn’t seem quite right.

That’s where our veterinary team comes in.

From assessing the horse in person and examining the limbs and joints, to using diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, every step helps us understand what may be causing a change in comfort or performance.

These moments behind the scenes are an important part of what we do at RVS, working closely with horses, listening to what their bodies are telling us, and using veterinary expertise to guide the next step.

Because every horse is different, and every horse deserves an individual approach.

Best of luck to everyone taking part in the Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout today at the Melbourne Royal Show - with Melbourne turning on some classic show-day weather and a little extra rain to add to the challenge!

First held in 1934, the Garryowen is one of Australia’s most prestigious and historic equestrian events. It was established in memory of accomplished horsewoman Violet Murrell and her champion show hack, Garryowen, after Violet tragically lost her life while trying to save Garryowen and another horse from a stable fire at her Mentone home.

More than 90 years later, the Garryowen remains a true test of horsemanship, preparation and attention to detail.

Competitors are judged across every aspect of the horse-and-rider combination, including riding ability, conformation and soundness, manners and paces, general appearance, saddlery and costume.

And today, with the rain adding another layer to the preparation, presentation and riding, it will take even more skill and composure to produce a polished performance in the ring.

For generations of Australian equestrians, simply competing in the Garryowen is an achievement in itself, while having your name added to its remarkable honour roll is something very special.

Ever wondered why vets flex a horse’s legs during a lameness or pre-purchase examination?

Flexion tests are used to help identify areas that may be causing pain or discomfort.

The limb is held in flexion for a short period before the horse is immediately trotted away. Our vets then compare the horse’s gait with how it moved before the test and assess whether any lameness appears or becomes more noticeable.

A positive flexion response can provide an important clue, but it isn’t a diagnosis on its own. Flexion places stress on several joints and surrounding soft tissues at the same time, so the result needs to be interpreted alongside the horse’s overall gait, clinical examination and, when required, further diagnostic testing.

A small amount of temporary unevenness can occur even in sound horses, which is why technique, consistency and experienced interpretation all matter.
