🐾 Preventing IVDD: Why Being Proactive Is Better Than Facing a Disc Injury Later

If you share your life with a Dachshund, you've probably heard of Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). Unfortunately, this condition is one of the most common and devastating health concerns affecting the breed.

While modern veterinary medicine can do amazing things for dogs suffering from IVDD, the reality is simple:

Prevention is always easier, safer, and less expensive than treatment and recovery.

What Is IVDD?
IVDD occurs when the discs that sit between the vertebrae of the spine degenerate, bulge, or rupture. When this happens, the spinal cord can become compressed, causing pain, weakness, loss of coordination, and in severe cases, paralysis.

Dachshunds are particularly vulnerable due to their long backs and short legs, which place increased stress on the spine throughout their lives.

Why Prevention Matters
Many owners don't think about IVDD until their dog suddenly shows symptoms. Unfortunately, by the time signs appear, damage may already have occurred.

Treatment often involves:
🐾 Emergency veterinary care
🐾 Strict crate rest for weeks or months
🐾 Pain medications
🐾 Rehabilitation therapy
🐾 Potential spinal surgery costing thousands of dollars
🐾 Long recovery periods and lifestyle adjustments

While many dogs recover well, some are left with permanent weakness, chronic pain, or mobility challenges.

This is why proactive spinal care is so important.

Real-World Experience with IVDD

At The Canine Fitness Centre, we work with a large number of Dachshunds that have experienced IVDD episodes.

Some of these dogs have required spinal surgery to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, while others have been successfully managed using conservative treatment, including strict rest, medication, and rehabilitation.

One thing we see time and time again is that recovery can be a long and challenging journeyβ€”not only for the dog, but also for their family. Rehabilitation often involves weeks or months of carefully controlled exercise, muscle rebuilding, and gradual return to normal activities.

While many dogs make excellent recoveries, some are left with ongoing weakness, reduced mobility, or an increased risk of future episodes.
This is why we are passionate about preventative care. If we can help owners build strength, maintain fitness, manage weight, and improve spinal support before an injury occurs, we may be able to reduce the likelihood or severity of future problems.

Hydrotherapy isn't simply rehabilitation after an IVDD attackβ€”it can also be an important part of a proactive fitness and conditioning program designed to help keep your Dachshund stronger, healthier, and moving well for longer.

Building a Stronger, More Resilient Dachshund
Although no prevention strategy can completely eliminate the risk of IVDD, maintaining strong muscles and healthy body condition can significantly reduce the strain placed on the spine.

Key prevention strategies include:
βœ” Maintaining a healthy weight
βœ” Regular low-impact exercise
βœ” Building strong core and postural muscles
βœ” Avoiding repetitive jumping on and off furniture
βœ” Using ramps where appropriate
βœ” Supporting overall fitness and mobility throughout life

One of the safest and most effective ways to achieve these goals is through hydrotherapy.

How Hydrotherapy Helps Reduce IVDD Risk
Hydrotherapy provides a controlled, low-impact environment that allows Dachshunds to exercise without placing excessive stress on their spine or joints.

πŸ’¦ Builds Core Strength
Strong core muscles act like a natural support system for the spine.
Underwater treadmill exercise encourages dogs to engage their abdominal, back, and stabilising muscles, helping improve spinal support and posture.

πŸ’¦ Develops Muscle Without Impact
Water provides natural resistance in every direction.
This allows Dachshunds to strengthen muscles safely without the jarring forces associated with running, jumping, or rough play.

πŸ’¦ Supports Healthy Weight Management
Excess body weight significantly increases spinal loading and is considered a major risk factor for IVDD.

Hydrotherapy burns calories while being gentle on vulnerable joints and backs, making it an excellent option for weight management.

πŸ’¦ Improves Coordination and Body Awareness
Hydrotherapy encourages controlled movement patterns and helps dogs become more aware of where their feet and body are positioned.
Better coordination means reduced risk of slips, falls, and awkward movements that can place strain on the spine.

πŸ’¦ Maintains Mobility as Dogs Age
Regular hydrotherapy can help maintain muscle mass, flexibility, and mobility throughout a Dachshund's life, particularly as they enter their senior years when muscle loss naturally occurs.

Hydrotherapy Isn't Just for Injured Dogs
One of the biggest misconceptions is that hydrotherapy is only for rehabilitation after an injury.

In reality, many Dachshunds benefit from hydrotherapy long before any problem develops.
Think of it as preventative fitness trainingβ€”helping your dog build strength, maintain mobility, and support spinal health before issues arise.

The Bottom Line
No one can guarantee a Dachshund will never develop IVDD. Genetics still play a significant role.

However, maintaining a healthy weight, building strong muscles, and supporting spinal health throughout your dog's life can help reduce risk and improve resilience.

When it comes to IVDD, the best time to start protecting your Dachshund's spine isn't after an injury occursβ€”it's today.

🐾 A stronger body provides better support for the spine.
🐾 Better fitness means better mobility.
🐾 Prevention is always preferable to recovery.
Your Dachshund's back will thank you for it. :::

🐾 HIP DYSPLASIA IN DOGS: WHAT EVERY DOG OWNER SHOULD KNOW

🦴 What Is Hip Dysplasia?
Hip dysplasia is a developmental condition affecting the hip joint while a dog is growing. Although it is most commonly associated with larger breeds, any dog can be affected.

In a healthy hip, the ball of the femur fits securely into the hip socket. With hip dysplasia, the joint develops abnormally, resulting in looseness and instability. Some dogs show no obvious symptoms, while others experience pain, reduced mobility, and arthritis.

🧬 What Causes Hip Dysplasia?
Hip dysplasia develops through a combination of genetics and environmental influences.

πŸ• Breed Predisposition Certain breeds are more likely to develop hip dysplasia, including:
β€’ German Shepherds
β€’ Labrador Retrievers
β€’ Golden Retrievers
β€’ Rottweilers
β€’ Saint Bernards
β€’ Old English Sheepdogs

βš–οΈ Environmental Factors
Several lifestyle factors can contribute to the development or severity of hip dysplasia:
β€’ Rapid growth during puppyhood
β€’ Excess weight gain
β€’ Poor nutrition
β€’ Excessive high-impact exercise during development

⚠️ Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
Symptoms can appear at any age and vary greatly between dogs.
Common signs include:
🐾 Hind leg lameness or limping
🐾 Difficulty standing up or lying down
🐾 Reluctance to run, jump, or climb stairs
🐾 Bunny-hopping gait when running
🐾 Swaying or weakness in the hindquarters
🐾 Reduced exercise tolerance
🐾 Stiffness after rest
🐾 Decreased muscle mass in the rear legs

πŸ” How Is Hip Dysplasia Diagnosed?
Your veterinarian will perform a physical examination and assess your dog's range of motion, mobility, and comfort levels.

πŸ“Έ X-rays are typically used to:
βœ” Confirm the diagnosis
βœ” Assess joint stability
βœ” Identify arthritic changes
βœ” Determine the severity of the condition

πŸ’™ Treatment Options
Every dog is different, and treatment recommendations depend on age, severity, lifestyle, and the degree of arthritis present.
Many dogs can live happy, active lives without surgery when provided with appropriate rehabilitation and ongoing management.

🌊 Non-Surgical Management
Conservative treatment focuses on reducing pain, improving mobility, and slowing joint degeneration.

Common approaches include:
βš–οΈ Weight management
πŸ₯© Nutritional support and joint supplements
πŸ’Š Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications
🏊 Hydrotherapy and rehabilitation exercises
πŸ’ͺ Muscle strengthening programs
🩺 Veterinary monitoring
🌊 Hydrotherapy for Hip Dysplasia

At The Canine Fitness Centre, we work with many dogs diagnosed with hip dysplasia.
Hydrotherapy offers a safe, low-impact way to exercise while reducing stress on painful joints.

Benefits of Hydrotherapy:
βœ” Builds muscle strength
βœ” Improves joint stability
βœ” Enhances range of motion
βœ” Supports weight management
βœ” Improves cardiovascular fitness
βœ” Reduces discomfort associated with arthritis
βœ” Helps maintain mobility and quality of life

Many dogs with hip dysplasia can remain comfortable and active for years when hydrotherapy is incorporated into a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.

πŸ₯ Surgical Options
When conservative management is no longer providing adequate results, surgery may be considered.

πŸ”Ή Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO)
The ball portion of the hip joint is surgically removed.
βœ… Often highly successful in smaller dogs
βœ… Can reduce pain significantly
βœ… Creates a functional "false joint"
This option may also be recommended for larger dogs with severe arthritis or hip dislocation.

πŸ”Ή Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO)
This procedure repositions the pelvis to improve the alignment of the hip joint.
βœ… Best suited to young dogs
βœ… Performed before significant arthritis develops
βœ… Helps improve joint stability

πŸ”Ή Total Hip Replacement (THR)
A damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial implant.
βœ… Can restore near-normal function
βœ… Provides excellent long-term outcomes
βœ… Often considered when other treatments have failed

This is a specialised procedure typically performed by veterinary surgeons with advanced orthopaedic training.

🐢 Thinking About Breeding?
Hip dysplasia has a strong hereditary component, making responsible breeding practices extremely important.
The AVA/ANKC Canine Hip & Elbow Dysplasia Scheme (CHEDS) assesses hip and elbow health through specialised radiographic scoring.

Key Facts:
πŸ“‹ Dogs must generally be over 12 months of age
πŸ’‰ X-rays are performed under anaesthetic
πŸ“Έ Images are assessed by veterinary radiologists
πŸ“Š Lower scores indicate healthier joints
Breeding from dogs with lower-than-average scores helps reduce the incidence of hip dysplasia in future generations.

πŸ– Nutrition and Exercise for Growing Puppies
Healthy growth plays an important role in joint development.

Nutrition Tips
πŸ₯© Feed a balanced diet appropriate for growth
βš–οΈ Avoid excessive weight gain
🐾 Monitor body condition regularly

Exercise Tips
βœ” Encourage regular activity
βœ” Allow free movement and play
❌ Avoid excessive jumping
❌ Avoid repetitive ball throwing sessions
❌ Avoid prolonged running beside bikes
❌ Avoid excessive high-impact exercise during growth

❀️ Caring for a Dog with Hip Dysplasia
There is a lot you can do to help your dog remain comfortable and active.

Helpful Management Strategies
🐾 Seek veterinary advice early
βš–οΈ Maintain a healthy body weight
🏊 Incorporate hydrotherapy and rehabilitation exercises
πŸ’Š Use medications as prescribed
πŸ₯© Consider joint-support supplements
🚢 Provide regular, controlled exercise
πŸ› Ensure comfortable bedding and non-slip surfaces

πŸ’™ The Bottom Line
A diagnosis of hip dysplasia doesn't mean your dog can't enjoy a happy and active life.
With early intervention, appropriate weight management, structured rehabilitation, hydrotherapy, and veterinary support, many dogs continue to run, play, and enjoy excellent quality of life for years to come.

PRICE RISE!!

I just wanted to let you know that from the end of June there will be a small price increase across services at The Canine Fitness Centre.

Unfortunately, despite doing my best to keep pricing unchanged, the ongoing increases in water and electricity costs mean I can no longer absorb these expenses as a small business.

From July:
🐾 All hydrotherapy sessions will be $50/dog ($45 for 2 or more dogs in same session)
🐾 Packages will be adjusted accordingly to reflect the increase. Prepurchased packages will be honoured.
🐾 Swim-only sessions will increase to $20 for the first dog and $10 each for any other family dogs swimming at the same time
🐾 Dogs coming in to swim only, whilst another family dog is treadmilling will cost $15 for first dog and $10 each for any others.

I truly appreciate your continued support, trust, and understanding. It means so much to be part of your dogs’ health and rehabilitation journey ❀️

Please like and comment with your dogs name so I can ensure everyone knows.

Thank you,
Tandy

🐾 Why Physical Conditioning Is So Important for Dogs (It’s About More Than Daily Walks!)

Keeping your dog active involves much more than a game of fetch or a lap around the block. A well-rounded conditioning program helps support strength, mobility, confidence, and overall wellbeing throughout every stage of life. At the Canine Fitness Centre we can help your dog live their best life.

🌊 Hydrotherapy: Low-Impact Exercise with Big Benefits

Hydrotherapy provides a safe and effective way for dogs to exercise while reducing stress on their joints. The buoyancy of water supports body weight, allowing dogs to move more comfortably while still working their muscles.

Hydrotherapy can be particularly beneficial for:
βœ” Dogs recovering from injury or surgery
βœ” Senior dogs experiencing mobility changes
βœ” Dogs with arthritis or joint conditions
βœ” Dogs needing help with weight management
Regular sessions can improve muscle development, cardiovascular fitness, joint mobility, and overall comfort while helping to reduce strain on the body.

πŸ’† Massage & Myofascial Therapy: Supporting Healthy Movement
Muscles and connective tissues work together to help your dog move efficiently. When these tissues become tight or restricted, movement can become uncomfortable and less effective.

Massage and myofascial techniques may help:
βœ” Relieve muscle tension
βœ” Improve circulation
βœ” Enhance flexibility and range of motion
βœ” Support recovery after exercise

These therapies can be valuable for both active dogs and those managing age-related or musculoskeletal challenges.

πŸ‹οΈ Strength & Stability Training: Building a Stronger Dog

Conditioning isn't only for rehabilitation. Targeted strength exercises help develop the muscles that support joints, improve balance, and protect against injury.
A structured conditioning program can help dogs:
βœ” Build core strength
βœ” Improve coordination and body awareness
βœ” Increase stamina and endurance
βœ” Reduce the likelihood of injury
From sporting dogs to beloved family companions, strength training helps support a healthier, more capable body.

πŸ”„ Warm-Ups & Cool-Downs: Small Steps, Big Impact
Many owners overlook warm-ups and cool-downs, but they play an important role in keeping dogs moving comfortably.
Before activity:
β€’ Increase blood flow to muscles
β€’ Prepare joints for movement
β€’ Reduce injury risk
After activity:
β€’ Support recovery
β€’ Minimise post-exercise stiffness
β€’ Help heart and breathing rates return to normal

For senior dogs, canine athletes, and dogs with previous injuries, these simple routines can make a significant difference.

πŸ’ͺ The Long-Term Benefits of Conditioning
A well-conditioned dog is often better equipped to:
βœ” Maintain mobility as they age
βœ” Recover more efficiently after exercise
βœ” Move with improved balance and posture
βœ” Stay stronger, fitter, and more comfortable

Dogs that move well tend to enjoy life more, participate more confidently in activities, and remain active for longer.

✨ Simple Ways to Get Started
You don't need to overhaul your routine overnight. Consider introducing:
🐾 Regular hydrotherapy or swimming sessions
🐾 Professional massage or myofascial therapy
🐾 A short warm-up before play or training
🐾 A gentle cool-down walk afterwards
🐾 Balance, stability, and core-strengthening exercises

Every dog can benefit from appropriate conditioning, whether they're a high-performance athlete or your favourite couch companion.
