💙 FAREWELL LAURA & ADDY! 💙

It’s time to say farewell to two valued members of our MVG team!

After joining the Monto Vet Team in November 2023, our Mundubbera receptionist Laura Maeyke is heading off to her next adventure!

Laura has been such a valued part of our team over the past few years, and her friendly face, warm nature and willingness to help will definitely be missed around the Mundubbera clinic. We’re so grateful for everything you’ve done during your time with us and wish you all the very best in your new job! ❤️

We’re also saying goodbye to our wonderful kennel hand Addison Smith, as she heads off to pursue her career as a Registered Nurse! 🩺💉

We’ve loved being part of Addy’s journey, including putting her through her Certificate II in Animal Studies, and watching her grow and develop her skills over the years. Addy has been such a valued part of our team, and we’re so grateful for all her hard work, help and care for our patients. We wish her all the very best as she takes this exciting next step and have no doubt she’ll make a fantastic nurse! ✨

Thank you both for everything you’ve contributed to MVG over the years. You’ll certainly be missed, but we’re excited to see what the future holds for you both!

We’re sure this won’t be the last we see of you — we’ll see you around! 🥰💙

🐶🧦 ROLLO’S SOCK COLLECTION! 🧦🐶

Meet Rollo, a very cheeky 10-week-old Great Dane puppy who came to see us after his owners discovered he had eaten a sock. 😳

We induced vomiting, expecting to retrieve… well, one sock.

But Rollo had other plans! 😂

Out came THREE SOCKS! 🧦🧦🧦

At just 10 weeks old, Rollo is already proving that Great Danes can have some seriously big appetites and apparently, a taste for laundry! 🤦‍♀️😂

Thankfully, with a little help from our team, Rollo avoided a potentially serious intestinal obstruction and was soon back to his cheeky puppy self. 💙

A good reminder that puppies will eat just about anything they can get their mouths around so keep those socks, toys and other tempting objects safely out of reach!

🐄 WHEN BIG REALLY MEANS BIG! 😲

Dr Stacey & Dr Meelie were recently called out to assist with a difficult calving, and this was certainly a calf that caught our attention! 😳

Unfortunately, despite everyone’s efforts, the calf was already deceased when we arrived. What really stood out, though, was just how big this calf was! When stretched out alongside our vet, the calf was the same length as her! 😲

A tough outcome, but a good reminder of the importance of keeping a close eye on cows coming up to calving and acting early when something doesn’t look right.

📸 Check out how big the calf was!

🐾 CASE STUDY: SOPHIE’S SENIOR HEALTH CHECK 🐾
⚠️ WARNING: GRAPHIC SURGICAL IMAGE⚠️

Meet Sophie 💕 A beautiful 12-year-old desexed German Shorthaired Pointer who came into the clinic for what seemed like a routine annual senior health check and blood profile.

Sophie was feeling well and there were no obvious signs that anything was wrong.

🩸 Her bloods told us a different story.

Her in-house blood profile showed elevations in:
• Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)
• Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)
• Creatinine

These changes prompted us to investigate further with an abdominal ultrasound.

🔎 The ultrasound revealed something unexpected.

Sophie’s kidneys, liver, pancreas and other abdominal organs appeared normal. However, her spleen was enlarged and appeared to be approx. 5–6 cm mass was identified.

Given the size and location of the mass, Sophie’s owner elected to proceed with surgical removal of the spleen (splenectomy).

During surgery, the abdomen was carefully explored and the spleen examined. We found a large mass at the head of the spleen, measuring approximately 10 cm in diameter.

While exploring the abdomen, we also identified small lesions on Sophie’s liver that had not been apparent on ultrasound. Given these findings, a liver biopsy was taken and submitted to the laboratory for further testing to help determine what these lesions represent.

The regional lymph nodes and liver were also carefully assessed, as these are important areas to examine when splenic neoplasia is suspected.

❤️ So why is this case so important?

Because Sophie came in for a routine health check.

She wasn’t presented because she was unwell. There were no obvious warning signs that a large splenic mass was sitting inside her abdomen.

Splenic masses can sometimes rupture suddenly, causing severe internal bleeding. This can quickly become a life-threatening emergency, and owners may have little or no warning that something is wrong until it happens.

Had Sophie not had her annual examination and blood profile, this mass may have continued to grow without us knowing.

✨ This is why regular health checks become increasingly important as our pets get older.

Blood tests can identify subtle changes that aren't always apparent from an external examination. When we find abnormalities, further investigation can sometimes uncover problems before they become an emergency.

Sophie’s case is a great reminder that looking healthy doesn’t always mean everything is healthy on the inside.

🐶❤️ Annual health checks and senior blood profiles can help us find the things you can’t see.

💙 HAPPY VET NURSE DAY! 🐾

Today we’re celebrating the incredible nurses who keep our clinic running, our patients comfortable and our vets (mostly 😜) organised!

From holding patients for procedures, monitoring anaesthetics, caring for hospital patients and preparing medications, to answering phones, comforting worried owners, cleaning up who knows what, and doing all the little things that often go unnoticed, our nurses do it all! 🩺🐶🐱🐴

Vet nursing is so much more than a job. It takes compassion, patience, skill, resilience and a whole lot of love for animals. ❤️

We are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated team of nurses at Monto Veterinary Group, and we couldn’t do what we do without you!

Thank you for everything you do for our patients, our clients and our team. We appreciate you today and every day! 🐾💙

Happy Vet Nurse Day to our amazing nurses! 🎉
