Mitchelton Veterinary Practice Mitchelton Veterinary Practice is a small animal practice operating under the Vetwell group. Mitchelton joined the Vetwell group in 2002.

As the first certified Veterinary Hospital in Brisbane, the very retro Mitchelton Veterinary Practice still retains its charm as a 70s-style concrete block vet facility. The practice was established by brothers Dion and Jim Danalis in 1971. Dion and Jim (who spent the late 60s working on a PhD with Professor Dowling at UQ) set up shop in Sizer Street in Everton Park at a time when there was no practice to the west of them (today there is one in every suburb). In 1972 they relocated to Blackwood St, and later moved across the road to our current hospital site in 1973. In the early days the Mitchelton vets might examine a calving cow, a pig with diarrhoea or a slow racehorse. From the beginning, specialists have practiced here (such as the late Dr Saul Goldfarb, the father of Australian Veterinary Ophthalmology). With a resident specialist on-staff, that trend continues to this day. Since then, there has been a substantial upgrade and renovation of the surgery suite, anaesthesia room, hospital areas, and veterinary equipment. The improvements for human comfort—the reception area, consulting rooms and building exterior—were completed in 2006

💙🐾 Happy Vet Nurse Day! 🐾💙

Today we celebrate our incredible veterinary nurses and all the amazing work they do!

So much of what our nurses do goes unseen, from monitoring anaesthetics and comforting patients, to cleaning up the endless messes, juggling a million tasks and providing love and care when it's needed most.

Vet nursing is so much more than cuddling puppies and kittens (although that's definitely a perk!). It's physically demanding, emotionally challenging and often thankless but our nurses show up every day with compassion, dedication and a whole lot of heart.

Happy Vet Nurse Day to all the incredible vet nurses out there! 🐾💕

⚠️ TICK SEASON IS HERE ⚠️

Paralysis ticks can be life-threatening and are found throughout many areas of Queensland.

There are several effective tick prevention options available for pets, including
spot-ons, oral treatments and a yearly injection (for dogs only).
Remember, no prevention is 100% effective, so daily tick checks are still essential particularly after spending time outdoors but remember that even pets who stay close to home can still be at risk.

Know the signs of tick paralysis and act quickly if something does not seem right. If you think you may have found a tick on your pet or you are concerned about any symptoms, please seek veterinary care immediately.

Teddy gets a dental

Little Teddy trotted into the vet clinic with his tail wagging, expecting the usual fuss and cuddles. This wasn’t his first visit, so he felt pretty confident—until he noticed something was a little different.
“Not grooming today, Teddy,” Beth said with a gentle smile. “Today we’re going to make those teeth sparkle!”
Teddy tilted his head. Teeth? Oh yes… those things he used for crunching biscuits and chewing his favourite toy. He hadn’t thought much about them before.
Soon, Teddy was wrapped up in a cozy blanket, feeling safe and sleepy. The kind vet and nurses took extra special care of him, cleaning each tiny tooth until they shone bright and fresh. They whispered what a good boy he was the whole time.
When Teddy woke up, he felt a little groggy—but oh, his mouth felt amazing! Fresh, clean, and ready for all the treats (the healthy kind, of course).
He gave a soft wag of his tail, proud of himself for being so brave.
As he headed home, Teddy realised something important…Even though it wasn’t a grooming day, it was still a day to feel his very best. 🐾✨

Maki the big brave Akita

Maki arrived at the vet clinic with her fluffy tail curled proudly over her back and her emotional support flamingo. She was a little curious about everything — the smells, the sounds, and all the friendly people saying hello.

Today was a big day for Maki. She was visiting the vet for her desexing surgery. Even though it was something new, Maki showed everyone just how brave an Akita can be. She had lots of gentle pats, kind voices reassuring her, and a comfy place to rest.

While the vets and nurses carefully looked after her, Maki had a little nap during her surgery. When she woke up, everything was all finished! To show she had been desexed, the vet gave her a tiny black desexing tattoo inside her left ear — a little mark that says she’s had her special surgery.

Afterward, Maki rested quietly, wrapped up in warm blankets like the good girl she is. Everyone at the clinic was so proud of her. She had been very brave all day, with not a single complaint.

Soon Maki would be heading home to recover, ready for cuddles, gentle walks, and lots of treats. And from now on, whenever someone sees the little tattoo in her ear, they’ll know that Maki the brave Akita had a big day at the vet and handled it like a champion. 🐾💚
