Yogi is a genuine, kind-hearted gelding with a wealth of experience and a wonderful foundation. He is by Peptonio and, although currently unregistered, he is eligible to be registered.
Yogi spent the first 12 years of his ridden life with the same owner, who purchased him as a two-year-old. During that time he was successfully campdrafted, regularly achieving 22-point camp scores, proving himself to be a capable and honest cow horse. He is definitely more woah than go but will get up and go when asked.
His temperament is one of his greatest assets. He was ridden with the owner’s two-year-old son in front of the saddle, and her mother—who was not an experienced rider—also confidently rode him on bush and mountain trail rides.
When previous owner first purchased Yogi, it took some time for him to build trust. Once that bond was established, he became an incredibly willing partner who was exceptionally smart and enjoyable to train.
Pervious owner who was 66 years of age, comfortably rode him around the farm in nothing more than a halter while checking stock. He happily heads out on his own, never worrying about leaving the other horses or trying to return to them.
Yogi has also attended Mel Fleming Horsemanship Clinics, where he continued to develop his softness, responsiveness and partnership.
He is an absolute pleasure to handle and is easy to own. He:
* Self-loads onto both floats and trucks.
* Is excellent for the farrier (66yo lady trims his feet myself while sitting beside him using a hoof stand).
* Opens and closes gates.
* Comes when called with a whistle.
* Is easy to catch.
* Is regularly ridden ba****ck.
* Has never been girthy.
* Can have six months off and be saddled up and ridden without fuss.
* Stands quietly, even at liberty, while being saddled.
* Side-passes over to the mounting block and waits patiently to be mounted or dismounted.
Under saddle, Yogi is responsive, athletic and light to ride. He is quick on his feet and moves willingly from your leg. He performs soft lateral work, moves nicely off your leg through diagonals and effortlessly steps from a walk straight into a canter.
His groundwork and liberty training are where he truly shines. Working purely from body language and energy, Yogi will:
* Back up over 30 metres from a simple finger cue.
* Circle freely at walk and trot.
* Change gait and direction from your energy.
* Side-pass both towards and away from you.
* Back towards you with a gentle pull on his tail.
Even more impressively, he performs this liberty work just as willingly in an 80-acre paddock, demonstrating the genuine connection and training he has received.
Yogi has been an absolute pleasure to own and work with, and he has taught me just how rewarding a true partnership with a horse can be.
Please note: Yogi can become a little looky or anxious around sheds or in unfamiliar environments. With a confident, reassuring rider he settles well, but this is something worth mentioning so he finds the right home.
