Stevie’s first trail ride! She did super! Traffic on the road, walk and trot in the bush, such a good young mare.

Accompanied by the gorgeous fluffy footed Archie 🥰 who was the perfect support horse for Stevie. He’s a cool little guy! Ridden today by Eila and did so well.

Zeus did not like this tree today! 😝 he did a decent spook spin and I stayed on but it took me by surprise.. recomposed ourselves and continued and then he did it again but not as big.. then we hung out by the tree for a rest and he decided it was actually ok and we kept riding.

Distractions and real world situations can be a big deal for a young horse and how you react and support the horse makes all the difference. I didn’t punish him or even make him work hard for spooking, I simply allowed him to take a moment and then once we had done some more trot work I offered him to rest by the tree and he realised he could relax there.

Welcome Zeus, a young Waler x Arab gelding for further development undersaddle.
He was started lightly about a year ago by another trainer who we value highly, he then had a spell and was sold by that owner to his current owner who has been doing groundwork with him in the lead up to him coming here for some ridden work.

My first ride on him at the start of this week felt like he lacked confidence to travel out and if pushed too hard he showed me he might get tight and have a buck- he didn’t actually but the feeling was close and I shut him down when he thought about it and he responded well and then relaxed.

Now a few days later and we have progressed to lots of trotting and today first ride in the arena instead of the roundyard and he did very well.

He tends to get distracted and look out and off in the distance but today he didn’t do that so much which was a good change.

Archie groundwork session prior to riding, where we were working on circles, changes of direction, stopping and backing, and then some other exercises as well to ensure he is relaxed, focused and willing prior to getting on to ride.

Archie doing a good job in our groundwork today, learning to do some lateral movements along the fence.

This is one of my favourite exercises to do on the ground as it helps to gain control of the feet not just by sending the horse on a circle but by traveling along the fence and asking for different tracks with the feet, from 4 track, to 3 track, to sidepass, to straight and back through those different positions in walk and trot.

We call this the “shoulder in on the fence” exercise as that’s how you begin it but it more so allows for a whole range of positions and tracks which is why I find it so useful.

Archie part bred Gypsy Cob gelding in for some further training for his owner.

His owner gave me a list of a few things to work on and assess including long reining which he did super with- I couldn’t film and steer him but we successfully did lovely soft changes of direction while maintaining walk and trot, and his stops were lovely!

So far off to an excellent start and this week I’ll continue to work on his ground skills but also see how we go with riding as that’s the ultimate goal for his owner to get back on track with their riding together after a loss of confidence in some situations.

Welcome Archie! A super cute Gypsy Cob cross, here for some further training.

First session today and he was a superstar with all the groundwork and long reining which his owner has requested I work on so she can do that as well as riding for variety and fun.

Such a cute chunky boy! 🥰
