Meet Miyako, or Miya for short! 🐾💗

Miya is a gorgeous 10-year-old Japanese Spitz × Pomeranian, otherwise known as a Pomspitz, and she truly has inherited the best of both breeds!

When Miya was eight, she developed SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome), a condition that causes rapid and irreversible blindness in dogs. Over the months that followed, Miya had to relearn how to navigate her home, familiar surroundings and everyday life without her sight.

With the support of her devoted family, Miya learned to rely more heavily on her other senses, particularly smell, hearing and touch through her paws and nose. She has adapted incredibly well and continues to approach life with confidence, curiosity and plenty of energy.

Miya is one remarkably resilient little Pomspitz, and we absolutely love having her visit the salon. 💕

Just don’t leave it quite so long between grooms next time, Miya! 😆🐶

Maybe it’s the wind machine. 💨

Meet Flora Clementine - runway supermodel 📸✨. Flora is a Shetland Sheepdog who has clearly decided that more wind machine 💨 is always the correct answer.

The coat? Fabulous.
The fluff? Exceptional.
The facial expression? Absolutely giving editorial.
The desire for additional wind? Insatiable.

Some dogs arrive at Spitz Groom ready for their close-up. Flora arrived ready for Vogue. 📸✨

There’s just something about a freshly groomed Sheltie coat catching the light, lifting in the breeze and doing that glorious whoosh thing.

More wind machine, please. I said more wind machine...

WHERE DOES ALL THAT DOG FUR GO?

If you've ever watched your dog leave Spitz Groom looking gloriously floof-free, you may have wondered what happens to all that fur we've removed.

Well, we don't simply throw it in the rubbish bin.

Clean fur from our grooming salon goes straight into our lime-green FOGO bin, because Spitz Groom operates within the City of Yarra. FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics, and City of Yarra Council specifically lists animal fur as an accepted material.

Once collected, Yarra's FOGO waste is taken to an organics processing facility, where it is composted and matured. The resulting compost is then used in agriculture, parks and gardens.

So that mountain of Samoyed fluff, the Pomeranian tumbleweeds and the satisfying clouds of undercoat we remove from your double-coated dogs don't necessarily end their journey in landfill. Instead, they become part of something much bigger.

From dog fur…to compost…to gardens, parks and agriculture.

It's a small part of what we do at Spitz Groom, but we think the little things matter.

🐾 Meet Benson! 🐾

At just 10 months old, this gorgeous Maltese × Shih Tzu came to Spitz Groom for his first ever groom…and honestly, you’d have thought he was a seasoned grooming veteran! ✨

Benson stood proudly and confidently on the grooming table, taking everything in his stride and showing us just how much of a little superstar he is. ⭐️

There is, however, one important lesson still to be learned: nail grinders are NOT chew toys. 😂🦷

He’s still young, so we’ll give him some time to work that one out. With patience, positive experiences and a little practice, he’ll get there.

🤍 Meet Humphrey🤍

40kg of Swiss Shepherd magnificence…and quite possibly several kilos of fur lighter after his visit! 😂

Humphrey, is a gorgeous 5-year-old White Swiss Shepherd Dog, also known as the Berger Blanc Suisse.

At a very respectable 40kg, Humphrey is an impressive boy. But judging by the mountain of undercoat we were able to blow and brush out, we reckon he may have left Spitz Groom a few kilos lighter. There was fur. Everywhere. 🤍💨

The White Swiss Shepherd is a relatively young breed in its modern form. The breed developed from white shepherd dogs imported into Switzerland from Canada & North America, with the first imports arriving in the early 1970s. In 2002 the breed was provisionally recognised by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, before receiving definitive recognition in 2011. The UK Kennel Club followed in 2017.

And while Humphrey certainly has the physical presence of a serious working dog, don’t let that handsome, imposing exterior fool you…He’s a giant softie. ❤️

Humphrey absolutely loves a good cuddle, and once the grooming was done, he was more than happy to demonstrate that underneath all that magnificent white fluff is one very affectionate boy.

A beautiful dog, an impressive coat and a whole lot of personality. Humphrey, you are one very handsome gentleman. 🐾🤍

🐾 Meet Brava & Wesley 🐾

Introducing Brava, a gorgeous 3-year-old Japoodle, and her little brother from another mother, Wesley, a very handsome 1-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. ❤️🐶

These two are joined at the hip. Brava absolutely dotes on her little brother, and Wesley clearly knows he has the best big sister in the business.

While one was being groomed, the other was never far away. A quick check-in here, a little supervision there, and occasionally just making sure everything was proceeding according to the 'Sibling Monitoring Protocol™'. 😂

They were constantly checking on each other, and honestly, it was ridiculously sweet to watch. Brava is the ultimate big sister, and Wesley is one very lucky, very handsome little brother. 🥰

Two dogs. Two grooms. One inseparable little family. 🐾💕

❄️ Meet Barry. BIG boy. BIG coat. BIG personality. 🐻‍❄️

Barry is a 2yo Samoyed and, quite frankly, one fine lad.

Today, Barry brought a little piece of Siberia to Spitz Groom. By the time we were done grooming Barry, there was white floof from one end of Nicholson Street to the other🤣. Our Dyson is currently considering early retirement. 😂

This full groom took 1½ groomers and a little over 4 hours. That’s a serious investment in floof, but when you see the finished result, it’s pretty easy to understand why.

And yes, Barry’s coat production would have made Mt Buller jealous. ❄️🐾

Big coat. Big job. Very fine boy.
And just like every dog who visits Spitz Groom, we think he’s worth every minute. ❤️
