➡️ More Than Just Play ⬅️

It’s all in the captions peeps!

If you want to take your own training to the next level reach out.

We’ve been doing it longer, better, and with more success than another other business in Melbourne - hands down…and we’re here to help you too!

➡️ In A Holding Pattern ⬅️

Generalisation is the process by which a behaviour trained in one context transfers to other contexts without explicit retraining in each of them.

Lunchy has never done this many holds in a session, and we’ve never worked with 50% of these items. What you’re seeing here is the second serial after the first go-round didn’t get recorded…so that makes me even happier.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from the copper pipe, because it’s actually quite unenjoyable for dogs to have in their mouth - much like sucking on a two cent piece would be for us.

We kept things flowing and fun, decreasing all criteria outside of the act of taking willingly and holding securely. That said, I really didn’t need to show much understanding because she was on point.

Blink, and they’re gone.

➡️ We Built This Option ⬅️

Lunchy and I were playing around a foot tap to the rear leg knee as a prompt to advance our ‘Stand Out Of Motion’ exercise.

Some of you out there may well be able to just quickly use this idea with zero preparation and get great results - and if that’s you then more power to you, really glad this handler tip could help.

I’m not against that idea AT ALL - take these advantages where you find them and use them for effect!

This foot tap idea wasn’t something I created on the fly though - it’s an option that I’ve been building towards having available on-cue, in the moment, since Lunchy was a little puppy.

It wasn’t built as a foot tap though…it was built as a tactile cue to extend the back leg and eventually to hold it in place for a second.

Every now and again I’ll hear back chatter along the lines of ‘Brad does all this useless crap’ or ‘Why does he make it so complicated’…

I usually just chuckle when I hear that stuff, because I know those things produce moments like these.

My aim is development by design, with overall development as the primary goal, intended to produce a very clever dog that puts ideas together and learns rapidly and happily across a broad manner of methods of teaching/learning.

This same simple inclusion to Lunchy’s foundational work has helped me in obedience transitions, the wall walk to handstand, backwards walking, heelwork…all for a small investment of time, effort and reinforcement.

To me that’s what Build More Dog® is all about.

⛔️ End thing.

🧠 All of us should want our dogs to think (and feel) "𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦!" when we cue them to perform certain behaviours.

💡 When it comes to producing behaviours that are 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘭𝘺 reliable in the real world (read challenging, dynamic environments and situations) that 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦 attitude from the dog is a very important piece of that puzzle to aim for.

💰 Whilst 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦 certainly has a genetic component to it, ultimately it's a function of the quality of training that you invest in that dog.

🎥 Bearing in mind that short videos don't show the whole picture by any means, consider what it means when you see dog trainers rarely posting any work that shows 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦 attitudes in the dogs they train. If you seldom see it in what they share, then that's most likely because that trainer simply isn't skilled enough to produce those outcomes.

⚠️ Watch many of the businesses out there on social media that push 'fix all' board and train solutions, particularly over shorter time frames like 3wks, and you'll tend not to see much 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦. This is because F𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦 is about high repetitions involving high level reinforcers that the dog is deeply excited about - and in this regard mere weeks just won't cut it for the vast majority of dogs.

🚫 If you're following somebody developing a puppy and their work is not heavily focussed on 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦, then you're what you're seeing isn't good work.

👉 Quality dog training is 𝗡𝗢𝗧 just about training for action. It's also about training dogs for abstinence. 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗡𝗢 is not without it's importance in developing a dog to it's fullest potential, and can't be overlooked.

🗣Training that focuses heavily on 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗡𝗢 is very, very unlikely to ever produce a profoundly 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦 attitude.

🙏 The more 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦 your dog brings to your work together, the less 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗡𝗢 you will need, and the less the 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗡𝗢 you do need will affect the 𝗙𝗨𝗖𝗞 𝗬𝗘𝗦 that your dog possesses.

➡️ Starting Out With Purpose ⬅️

Linc’s big goal with his first dog is to build little Buddy to be a constant companion, able to go anywhere and do anything.

Here you’ll see some of the practical stuff we teach in our first session with a baby puppy.

Most puppy classes focus on simple skills, and teach them in a way that’s easy to teach whilst making owners feel successful NOW.

If those folks just do their 4 puppy class sessions and leave it there, they’ll often be stuck at that level of understanding forever more…that often produces problems because the problem doesn’t scale into the future.

Beyond sharing information, helping folks design their next few months of training and development, we focus on beginning to build handler skills in a way that will compound over time - they easily adapt as the dog grows, and the training advances.

It just makes sense, right?

❤️ Let’s assume it’s not 𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘭𝘭 possible that you could love your dog any more than you do…

❓Is it possible that you could love your dog 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥?

❤️ That saying at the start of this post - that’s something I frequently say to my dogs when I’m sharing a close moment with them.

👀 You see, it’s really 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 easy for me to reconcile what I do or don’t do with my dogs based on the fact I couldn’t possibly love them more than I do...I know this because I've been guilty of it in the past.

💭 But what if I’m not giving them what they need?

🚫 𝗡𝗢. 𝗡𝗢 𝗜𝗧 𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗧.

💭 You can love your dog 11/10, but if you haven’t trained him to walk on a loose leash and that affects his potential to be included more broadly in your life - wouldn’t that indicate that you could love them 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥?

🤷 ‍ “I’d die to protect my dog” - 𝗕𝗨𝗧 I consistently run that same dog off leash in situations where I have very little potential to ensure his safety - perhaps relying on the charity and responsiblity level of others that I don’t know, and shouldn’t trust.

✅ In that scenario I could definitely 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥 express my love for my dog by investing in training my dog to remain responsive off leash, under distraction, and by assuming the charity of other dog owning strangers is both fickle and unreliable.

👉 I’m surely 𝗻𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 on love - and many would argue I’m 𝗻𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁 on dogs…but what I know for sure is that when it comes to dogs the 𝗪𝗔𝗬 that we love them counts…

🧠 Work to love your dog in a way that exceeds it’s needs, even where that's not the way you want to love them.
