Birds are masters at hiding illness.

In the wild, showing signs of sickness can make them vulnerable to predators, so many birds will appear normal even when they're unwell.

That's why subtle changes in behaviour, appetite, weight or droppings should never be ignored.

Early detection and intervention can make all the difference.

“Just one bite…” 🥑⚠️

Mango got a little too interested in avocado toast — and that could have been fatal.

When his family noticed the missing bites, they didn’t wait. They brought him straight in to THe Bird Vets in Burwood.
That quick decision likely saved his life.

Avocado is toxic to birds. Even small amounts can cause serious illness — breathing issues, heart damage, and sometimes sudden death. There’s no antidote.

Dr Ruth was able to remove avocado from Mango’s crop and give activated charcoal to help reduce toxin absorption.

Thankfully, Mango is doing well 🐦💙

Please don’t take the risk:
Never feed avocado to birds. If you think your bird has had any, seek avian vet care immediately. Timing really matters ⏱️

👉 If you’ve had a similar scare with your bird, we’d genuinely love to hear about it — sharing these moments helps other owners recognise the risks early. Comment blow.

Oh Mango… this cheeky little boy gave everyone quite a fright this Easter 🐦🍫💔

Like so many parrots, Mango is curious, clever, and always ready to investigate anything he can get that strong little beak into. Unfortunately, after Easter, that included a chocolate bunny.

When his owner found him happily munching away, they knew this was an emergency. Chocolate is toxic to birds, containing theobromine and caffeine, so Mango was rushed straight to the clinic.

Dr Ruth quickly stepped in and carefully removed as much chocolate as possible from his crop.

The good news? Sweet Mango suffered no ill effects and made a full recovery 💚

We know how easy it is for our feathered family members to get into things they shouldn’t, and stories like Mango’s are a reminder of just how fast accidents can happen.

Today, we’re just very grateful this beautiful little patient had such a happy ending. Please give Mango a little love in the comments 💕🦜

🚨 Infectious Coryza Can Spread Through Your Flock Fast 🚨

We’ve just had a chicken test positive for Avibacterium paragallinarum, the bacteria that causes infectious coryza.

👉 This is a bacterial respiratory disease in chickens.

If you keep backyard chickens, this is something you should know about.

⚠️ Early signs are easy to miss, until suddenly they’re not

Watch for:
• Puffy or swollen face, especially around the eyes
• Swollen sinuses
• Wet or sticky eyes
• Runny nose or a dirty face
• Sneezing or odd breathing sounds
• Quiet, off food, or just not right
• Sudden drop in egg laying

🛑 Here’s the important part

If one bird has it, the rest of the flock has likely already been exposed.

But...

👉 Do not necessarily rush to treat all birds if they look normal .

💊 If other birds do become affected

We have treatment options, including: • Chicken safe registgered In-water flock medication such as chlortetracycline. From https://pet-shop.au/chicken-medications/
• Individual Coyza treatment with off-label doxycycline

These can help control signs and reduce the spread, but birds may become carriers.

✅ What you should do right now • Check your birds daily.
• Isolate sick birds

📞 If you’re unsure, don’t wait, book an in-person or phone consultation with our avian Chicken Veterinarians - they know backyard chickens well! ((https://advancenotice.yourlocalvet.com.au/?BBAH01)
We’d much rather keep your flock healthy now!

Being a real Bird Vet

Love being a simple Avian Veterinarian, able to help when it really matters.

Thanks to you all, the birdy world, helping us create this brilliant avian facility. All the bird vet team are so comfortable around birds, and our feathered friends feel it.

We were protecting the pigeon from the quaker. Not sure whom we called Sidney.

The Best Pet? Blue and Gold Macaw

Blue & Gold Macaw in for treatment today 💛💙🦜

Brilliant handling of a difficult, potentially dangerous bird — done in a calm, controlled, and relaxed way by Dr Phil.

Blue & Gold Macaws are powerful birds and armed with beaks that can break through human fingers!. Competent handling of large parrots takes years of experience and allows examination, treatment, and medication to be given easily and with minimal fuss, despite the noise.

Note the macaw-sized heated, hospital cage — typically found in an avian referral veterinary hospital.

(Has anyone noticed the beak issue? - please comment below)

Taking a bird to the bird vet for a blood test. A bird takes blood samples from birds every day. ,Is it easy? Meditational. Can it be done calmly and peacefully in a non sedated bird. Dr Phil caught off guard taking blood from an uncooperative Parrot for blood testing. It's done at the back of the clinic ..so this is an unedited behind the scenes view.
