We are always suggesting this, not just for poodles but any breed that requires a lifetime of grooming. Desensitising at a young age sets them up for a positive grooming experience. A simple and easy thing that can be done at home.

When the weather gets warmer it is a really common request to ask for double-coated dogs such as Labradors, German Shepherds, Border Collies, Huskies etc to be shaved.

But here’s the thing πŸ‘‡

A good de-shed is far better than shaving.

Double coats are designed to insulate, they help keep dogs cool in summer and warm in winter. When you shave them, you actually remove their natural temperature regulation and protection from the sun, which can lead to:
β€’ Overheating
β€’ Sunburn
β€’ Patchy or damaged coat regrowth
β€’ Long-term coat issues

A proper de-shed removes the dead undercoat that traps heat, allowing air to flow through the coat while still keeping that protective top layer intact. Your dog feels cooler, lighter and far more comfortable, without the risks.

If your double-coated dog is struggling in the heat, the answer isn’t a shave. It’s a thorough de-shed and regular brushing.

If you’re unsure what’s best for your dog’s coat we are always happy to assess your dogs coat and find a solution to keep them comfortable and healthy 🐢

On a sunny, warm day, it is tempting to take your dog for a walk to enjoy the fresh air. But before you head out the door be mindful that the ground can get dangerously hot, and walking on it can cause serious harm to your dog’s paws.

Burns and Blisters: Asphalt and concrete can absorb heat quickly and reach temperatures of up to 60Β°C or more, especially in direct sunlight. Dog paw pads are sensitive, and walking on such hot surfaces can cause burns, blisters, or even permanent damage to their pads.

Heatstroke Risk: Walking your dog on hot pavement isn’t just tough on their paws β€” it can also increase the risk of heatstroke. Dogs can’t cool off as efficiently as humans, and when their body temperature rises too much, they can overheat. The combination of a hot walk and a stressed dog can lead to serious health issues.

How to Protect Your Dog:

Test the ground: Before heading out, place your hand on the pavement for 5-10 seconds. If it’s too hot for you to touch comfortably, it’s too hot for your dog.

Walk early or late: Stick to cooler times of day, such as early morning or late evening, when the ground is less likely to be hot.

Paw protection: Consider using dog booties to shield their paws from the heat. You can also apply paw balm to help protect their pads.

Opt for grassy areas: If you need to walk during the day, try to stick to grassy, shaded areas, where the ground is cooler.

Your dog’s safety and well-being are in your hands. Be mindful of the ground surface temperature on hot days and choose safer, cooler alternatives for exercise to ensure your furry friend stays comfortable and healthy β˜€οΈ
