UPDATE: Hospital at Capacity!

🏥 Important Update – Emergency & Hospital Care

Our hospital is currently at full inpatient capacity.

We remain the only veterinary clinic providing on-call emergency veterinary care in Maryborough over the weekend, we appreciate your patience and understanding while our hospital is operating at capacity. Thank you to our team who has been working so hard over the long weekend!

While our hospital remains full, any emergency patient requiring admission or ongoing hospitalisation may need to be referred to another veterinary hospital with available inpatient capacity..

We understand that referral, particularly when your pet is unwell, can be stressful and may involve travelling outside Maryborough. This decision will only be made when necessary to ensure your pet can receive the level of monitoring and hospital care they require.

It’s getting hot in here! ☀️🥵

Is it really only Spring?? The temperatures have been souring quickly and Winter is truly over.

What does this mean? The likelihood of heat stress/Stroke for pets is much higher. Heat stress is a very serious acute medical emergency. When their body’s temperature is too high for too long, this can result in multi-organ damage or failure which can ultimately lead to death.

Did you know there are some breeds of dog/cat that are predisposed to heat stress? If you guessed Brachycephalic breeds (squishy faced animals), then you are correct, your Pugs and Bulldogs, Persians and Himalayan’s are breeds that already, genetically, struggle to breathe because their airways are smaller, making it even more difficult for them to cool themselves down via panting. There are also other breeds like Staffordshire Terriers and your working breeds that are also commonly seen with heat stress as well, but ultimately heat stress can occur in any breed so this information applies for all pet parents.

For your pets it is extremely important that you are doing all you can to keep your pet cool on these hot days to come.

Your pet needs to have at minimum, access to water and shade. There are other things that can help keep your pet cool at home, like;

- Fans 👍
- Cooling mats 👍
- Shell pools 👍
- Air conditioning 👍
- Indoor access 👍
- Less activity during high temperatures 👍

What to avoid?

- Walking in hot temperatures/middle of the day 👎
- Playing with your dog outside in the heat/humidity 👎
- Tying your dog up outside 👎
- Walking on hot paths or bitumen 👎
- Locking your pet in a car for any period of time 👎

What to look out for?

- Rapid panting
- Bright red gums
- Excessive Salivation
- Increase in thirst
- Body tremors
- Weakness
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Collapse
- Seizures

What to do?

- Remove them from the hot environment
- Call us, is you are worried about any of the signs of heat stress mentioned above.

Heat stress can have lasting effects on your pet, it is important that if your pet has heat stress/heat stroke, that they are checked over by a Veterinarian as timing can mean everything for these animals in distress.

‼️AWARENESS POST‼️

It’s tick season already folks! We are currently treating a minimum of one patient per day and this number will only grow higher as summer hits.

Paralysis ticks inject a life threatening neurotoxin that affects all the muscles of an animal. It can range from paralysis of the legs to full paralysis of the swallowing and breathing muscles. Unfortunately, despite treatment, some patients have already not been lucky enough to go home. The best thing is however, it is easily preventable at home!

So if you are unsure if your pet is covered for paralysis ticks, please don’t hesitate to contact us and find out. There are a variety of flea and tick products you can buy over the counter so you are more than welcome to pop on in and speak to our friendly staff at any time. We would rather prevent this toxin than treat it.

Signs/symptoms of a paralysis tick:
- ataxia/wobbliness in front, hind or all legs
- vomiting/retching
- dyspnoea/trouble breathing
- altered bark or meow
- overall lethargy

Please don’t hesitate to contact us IMMEDIATELY if you find a tick or notice any of these signs in your beloved pet.

Puppies!

We get to see a lot of puppies at Maryborough Veterinary Surgery and it is important that when we do our exams to check for any possible medical concerns. These adorable little Longhaired Chihuahuas upon examination were found to have inguinal hernias, their owner was very proactive and wanted to make sure that they would be happy and healthy and had them scheduled for surgery to be repaired.

Repairing an inguinal hernia in a dog or cat is very important because it prevents serious health problems. If left untreated, organs like intestines or fat can push through the weakened abdominal wall, get trapped, and lose their blood supply. This can lead to tissue death, severe pain, and a life-threatening emergency. Early repair helps avoid these complications and ensures the dog's comfort and long-term health.

They are now 8 weeks old and have been recovering wonderfully after their hernia repair and won’t need to worry about any of the health concerns an untouched hernia would have posed.

Now they are awaiting their new homes, with some already enjoying their forever homes, there are two boys available, if you think one of these boys might be a right fit for your family, you may call the Clinic and ask for our nurse Tash for more information.

Paralysis ticks can affect **both dogs and cats**, and unfortunately even healthy pets can become critically ill within a short period of time. The good news is that **effective prevention and early treatment save lives.**

Please take a few minutes today to:
✅ Ensure your pet's tick prevention is up to date.
✅ Check your pet thoroughly every day, especially after they've been outdoors.
✅ Be aware of the early warning signs:
• Weakness or wobbliness
• Vomiting or regurgitation
• A change in bark or meow
• Heavy or laboured breathing

⚠️ If you notice any of these signs, don't wait. Contact your veterinarian immediately.** Tick paralysis is a medical emergency, and early treatment gives your pet the best chance of a full recovery.
