It’s tick season already folks! We are currently treating a minimum of one patient per day and this number will only grow higher as summer hits.

Paralysis ticks inject a life threatening neurotoxin that affects all the muscles of an animal. It can range from paralysis of the legs to full paralysis of the swallowing and breathing muscles. Unfortunately, despite treatment, some patients have already not been lucky enough to go home. The best thing is however, it is easily preventable at home!

So if you are unsure if your pet is covered for paralysis ticks, please don’t hesitate to contact us and find out. There are a variety of flea and tick products you can buy over the counter so you are more than welcome to pop on in and speak to our friendly staff at any time. We would rather prevent this toxin than treat it.

Signs/symptoms of a paralysis tick:
- ataxia/wobbliness in front, hind or all legs
- vomiting/retching
- dyspnoea/trouble breathing
- altered bark or meow
- overall lethargy

Please don’t hesitate to contact us IMMEDIATELY if you find a tick or notice any of these signs in your beloved pet.

Puppies!

We get to see a lot of puppies at Maryborough Veterinary Surgery and it is important that when we do our exams to check for any possible medical concerns. These adorable little Longhaired Chihuahuas upon examination were found to have inguinal hernias, their owner was very proactive and wanted to make sure that they would be happy and healthy and had them scheduled for surgery to be repaired.

Repairing an inguinal hernia in a dog or cat is very important because it prevents serious health problems. If left untreated, organs like intestines or fat can push through the weakened abdominal wall, get trapped, and lose their blood supply. This can lead to tissue death, severe pain, and a life-threatening emergency. Early repair helps avoid these complications and ensures the dog's comfort and long-term health.

They are now 8 weeks old and have been recovering wonderfully after their hernia repair and won’t need to worry about any of the health concerns an untouched hernia would have posed.

Now they are awaiting their new homes, with some already enjoying their forever homes, there are two boys available, if you think one of these boys might be a right fit for your family, you may call the Clinic and ask for our nurse Tash for more information.

Paralysis ticks can affect **both dogs and cats**, and unfortunately even healthy pets can become critically ill within a short period of time. The good news is that **effective prevention and early treatment save lives.**

Please take a few minutes today to:
✅ Ensure your pet's tick prevention is up to date.
✅ Check your pet thoroughly every day, especially after they've been outdoors.
✅ Be aware of the early warning signs:
• Weakness or wobbliness
• Vomiting or regurgitation
• A change in bark or meow
• Heavy or laboured breathing

⚠️ If you notice any of these signs, don't wait. Contact your veterinarian immediately.** Tick paralysis is a medical emergency, and early treatment gives your pet the best chance of a full recovery.

Meet our cute kitties we had in hospital over the weekend. Unfortunately, they all suffered from life-threatening urinary issues, which are explained later in this post, but have all since been discharged and are doing well at home 🐈 🩺 💙

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease is a broad description for any disease affecting the lower urinary tract of the cat - the bladder and urethra. There can be many causes including stress, diet, body condition and neutering age. Some cats produce struvite crystals which block the urethra. This is one of the most common emergencies we see in male cats. With the urethra blocked, the cat cannot urinate and the bladder continues to fill and becomes distended, very painful and at risk of rupturing and causing other major medical emergencies. A blocked bladder, if left untreated, is life-threatening!

Please keep an eye on your beloved cat’s toileting habits at home. Signs and symptoms can very from cat to cat but some major things to look out for are vocalising/straining to urinate (this can be sometimes confused with constipation), blood in the urine, urinating in unusual places, loss of appetite, vomiting and a painful abdomen. It is imminent to keep your cats indoors to monitor these habits. Please contact us promptly if any of these symptoms occur.

Things to help prevent these urinary issues:

- keep your cat at a healthy weight
- discuss with your vet on a suitable desexing age for your cat
- feeding high quality food that caters to a cat’s urinary needs
- adequate amounts of clean water supplied
- cleaning litter frequently and having multiple litter boxes available
- limit stresses to your cat such as bringing home a new pet, changing litter type, moving houses, loud noises etc. (Please phone the clinic if a stressful situation is bound to occur as medication may be used to help reduce anxiety)
