🐾 Tick Prevention: An Important Update for Pet Owners 🐾

Following recent local news coverage, we wanted to share an important reminder about Ehrlichia canis, the bacteria responsible for canine ehrlichiosis.

Although no confirmed cases have been identified in our region, this disease has been detected in Australia since 2020, with locally acquired cases reported further south than initially expected.

We’ve also seen an increase in the number of paralysis ticks recently, making it especially important to stay vigilant and ensure your pets are protected.

🐜 Why does tick prevention matter?

Ehrlichiosis can cause a range of clinical signs that may be vague and difficult to recognise. Infected ticks can transmit the disease relatively quickly after attaching, making effective tick prevention an important part of protecting your dog.

Not all tick prevention products work in the same way. Some act after a tick attaches, while others repel and/or kill ticks on contact. Understanding these differences can help you make informed decisions about your pet’s protection.

🐶 What should you do?

- Keep your dog's tick prevention up to date.

- Check your dog regularly for ticks, particularly after spending time outdoors.

- Be alert to changes in your dog's health, including lethargy, reduced appetite, fever or unexplained bruising.

- Speak with your veterinarian about the most appropriate tick prevention for your dog's lifestyle and risk factors.

While the risk may vary by location, staying informed and taking preventative measures are key to keeping our dogs safe.

🚨 PET SAFETY ALERT: MINOXIDIL TOXICITY 🚨
Did you know that minoxidil—a common ingredient found in hair regrowth products such as Regaine®—can be extremely toxic to pets, especially cats? 🐱🐶 Even very small exposures can be life-threatening.

🐾 Pets can be exposed by:
• Licking treated hair or skin
• Contact with contaminated pillows, bedding, clothing, or furniture
• Chewing tissues, applicators, or medication bottles containing minoxidil
• Grooming after walking on contaminated surfaces

⚠️ Signs of toxicity may include:
• Low blood pressure
• Abnormal heart rhythms
• Difficulty breathing or fluid on the lungs
• Collapse or cardiac arrest

🐱 Cats are particularly sensitive, and signs can develop quickly or up to 12 hours after exposure.

✅ Keep your pets safe:

🔒 Store products securely
🧼 Wash hands thoroughly after use
🚪 Apply products away from pets
🧹 Clean up spills immediately
⏳ Allow products to dry completely before contact with pets
🛏️ Keep pets away from treated bedding and pillows

🚨 If you suspect your pet has been exposed to minoxidil, contact your veterinarian immediately.
