East Coast Exotic Haven

East Coast Exotic Haven Registered NFP Charity: Wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release in the Fraser Coast. We are no kill = quality over quantity.

WELCOME TO EAST COAST EXOTIC HAVEN

We are a registered NFP (64 401 003 243) organisation in Queensland (Fraser Coast). Locally owned and operated wildlife rescue service & shelter that also offers services for the rescue/surrender and rehoming of ‘captive bred’ reptiles, amphibians and birds. We have over 30 years experience in wildlife care and rehabilitation, reptile husbandry and aviculture.

Along with studies in veterinary nursing, animal care, conservation and ecological management. We aim to Rescue, Rehabilitate, Release, Rehome and Repeat; whilst standing strongly for quality over quantity. The 5 main objectives that we fulfill to the highest of standards are:

1. Rescue, rehabilitate and release sick, injured and orphaned native fauna as required, in accordance with the Native Conservation Act 1992,
2. To provide prompt and adequate veterinary treatment for all animals in our care,
3. Provide appropriate husbandry for unwanted, neglected and abandoned captive bred reptiles and birds in accordance with the Native Conservation Act 1992
4. Seek suitable homes for surrendered captive bred reptiles and birds, whilst ensuring suitable homes have appropriate knowledge and licensing. In the event that a suitable home cannot be found, to offer sanctuary to the animals in our care to live out their lives without fear of euthanasia or neglect, and
5. To provide education, training and workshops to both members and general public regarding native fauna and the correct husbandry of reptiles and birds. Provide appropriate husbandry for unwanted, neglected and abandoned captive bred reptiles and birds in accordance with the Native Conservation Act 1992

🐍🦜🌺ADOPTIONS🌺🦜🐍
When available we offer adoptions of surrendered/rescued captive bred (permitted) reptiles, and birds. This is NOT a first in best dressed situation. Potential new homes are screened and successfully applicants are decided amongst our board members. All animals are only available if certain conditions are met:
🔅Correct and current licensing
🔅Suitable enclosure and proven knowledge on species
All animals are independently veterinary checked and treated. We beleive and stand by quality over quanity. Meaning we beleive that any animal should have quality to life over quantity.

🦘🌺WILDLIFE RESCUE & REHABILITATION🌺🦘
All wildlife is handled and cared for in accordance with the Native Conservation Act 1992 and Bio Security; the ultimate goal being to scuessfully rehabilitate and release to natural habitats. We are fully licensed and trained to handle and rehabilitate native wildlife. Our services for wildlife include; 🦇Bats (flying foxes and micros), 🦘Macropods (wallabies & kangaroos), Possums & Gliders, 🦜Birds and 🐍Reptiles. We cater for all of Cairns, Tablelands and Innisfail.

🦇🦇IF YOU FIND A BAT ALONE, INJURED OR ON THE GROUND DO NOT TOUCH IT, CALL 0499453674 ASAP.🦇🦇

Australian bats all have a small chance of having Lyssavirus. Lyssavirus has no cure, though is easily preventable by not touching any bat. It is only transferable through a bite or scratch. Its very simple- NO TOUCH = NO HARM. We are fully vaccinated against Lyssavirus, licensed and trained to handle and rehabilitate bats. Please if you find an injured or orphaned native animal call asap.
‼️It is illegal to keep native fauna if you are not trained and licensed to do so. They also require specialised diet and care. Your good intentions to care for them yourself can be a death sentence to the animal.‼️

We do NOT receive government assistance, all veterinary expences, species specialized equipement (milk, teats, enclosures etc) and emergemcy equipment is supplied privately or by the support of local community businesses and persons.

We continue to try to destroy it, but the human (not just for the native inhabitants) benefits of conserving natural habitats is huge. Healthy ecosystems directly support human health, food security, economic stability, climate resilience, and wellbeing.

The world’s ecosystems provide services valued at an estimated US$125–140 trillion per year, including clean water, pollination, soil formation, flood mitigation, and climate regulation. When habitats are destroyed, these services become expensive or impossible to replace.

Approximately 75% of global food crops rely at least partly on animal pollination. Habitat loss is considered one of the greatest threats to pollinators worldwide.

Native ecosystems protect water supplies

* Forests and wetlands naturally filter pollutants and sediments from water.
* More than one-third of the world’s largest cities obtain a significant portion of their drinking water from protected forested catchments.
* Restoring wetlands can reduce water treatment costs by millions of dollars annually.

Forests absorb roughly 7.6 billion tonnes of CO₂ annually, helping slow climate change.

Coastal habitats such as mangroves can reduce wave heights by up to 66%, protecting communities from storms and flooding.

Studies have found that people who spend at least 120 minutes per week in nature report significantly better physical and mental health.

Benefits include:

* Lower stress levels
* Reduced anxiety and depression
* Improved cardiovascular health
* Better sleep quality

Australia has already lost or degraded more than 50% of many native ecosystems since European settlement. Habitat loss remains the leading threat to most threatened Australian species.

Healthy native habitats provide Australians with:

* Cleaner water
* Pollination for crops
* Protection from floods and erosion
* Carbon storage
* Recreational and tourism opportunities
* Improved physical and mental health

We do not conserve native habitats only for wildlife. We conserve them because human survival, health, food security, clean water, economic prosperity, and climate resilience all depend on functioning natural ecosystems.

🦘 HELP US SAVE MORE KANGAROOS 🦘

Since January 2026, East Coast Exotic Haven has responded to an incredible 98 macropod rescues across our region.

Every rescue is a race against time. Our trauma carers are often called to injured kangaroos involved in vehicle strikes, fencing entanglements, dog attacks, and other emergencies. Having the right equipment can mean the difference between life and death.

Today, we are seeking community support to purchase three professional Kangaroo Rescue Bags, essential emergency response equipment used for the safe rescue and transport of injured wildlife.

These specialist rescue bags are:

✅ Designed, tested and made in Australia
✅ Manufactured from premium-grade PVC coated mesh
✅ Fitted with a heavy-duty “D” shaped zip for easier loading and unloading of injured animals
✅ Constructed with reinforced webbing handles for strength and safety during transport

Each bag costs $380, meaning we need to raise $1,140 to equip our trauma carers with this vital rescue gear. Anything over this will go into providing additional emergency rescue gear, milk and equipment.

As a registered Australian charity with DGR status, every donation directly supports wildlife rescue and rehabilitation in our community.

💚 Donations can be made directly to:

No donation is too small. Whether it’s $5, $20, or more, every contribution brings us closer to ensuring our carers have the equipment they need when wildlife needs them most.

Thank you for helping us give injured kangaroos and other native wildlife the best possible chance of survival.

🦘 Together, we can make a difference.

Working together is one of the ways we can make a difference 💙

Thank you so much Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue for meeting our volunteers and for taking the young one.

Definitely in the best hands possible 🩷

We got a phone call from members of the public from Harvey Bay, about a pelican that landed in someone’s backyard, we knew it was going to be a very young juvenile pelican.

So a lovely lady we know from Harvey bay passed East coast Exotic Haven number on to us , so we could contact them, they were so lovely to help.

Then we met the drivers at Gympie pond, she is only a very young pelican , her bill is only very small, she also very very under weight and full of lice.

So when we get her home tonight, we will give her fluids and some fish.

She will go into our icu room where it’s nice and warm.

Thank you all who were involved with this precious little pelican.

A very powerful message… and a terrible outcome. Bundy Bat Rescue you were with her in her final moments… you offered her the kindness she deserved from the start.

Wildlife aren’t pets, they aren’t toys for your children, you keeping it is animal cruelty… when you do this their death is your fault, but you won’t sit with them when they die… you put it onto a carer… someone who has already assisted in helping another, someone who is already emotional exhausted, someone who is already broken due to people like you.

I’m greatful you were there for her Linda, I’m greatful that you were the last human she had to interact with, I’m greatful you gave her the only kindness she received since loosing her mum.

Thank you 💜

Hi Bundy!

We remain busy with rescues and advice. I was woken at around 2 am this morning by some people who had found a deceased kangaroo by the road down at North Isis. She had a living joey in the pouch. I spent quite some time on the phone with them walking them through how to remove the joey from the pouch as it was a quite small one. The joey is now in care with East Coast Exotic Haven and the report I just received is that he is eating, pooping and peeing. So far so good!

I am just back in the door from a possum rescue down at 341 Bourbong Street. The little female who had not long left her mum had suffered a significant injury quite some time ago. She had no movement in her back end and was dragging it along. She had lost all the skin off her knee area from dragging her legs, and her back end was caked in faeces. I suspect she had been hit by a car and suffered catastrophic spinal damage. I drove her straight to Sugarland Animal Hospital where she was sent over the rainbow bridge. RIP little girl.

Finally the heart breaker. I got a call a few days ago, late in the evening for a joey that had been with a family for some time. The woman informed me that her daughter had been caring for it. Her daughter was 10. The family had no prior experience with rearing kangaroos. Apparently it was getting a bit lethargic and she thought it could do with a check up??? She asked if she could bring it to me. About an hour later she arrived. At my door I found a young girl clutching a joey in her arms. I took the joey, tried to get some details but they said they would ring me the next day and promptly left.

I checked her over but I knew what the outcome was going to be. She was dehydrated and emaciated and almost comatose. I gave her some subcutaneous fluid, pain relief and a sedative and put her into a pouch and sat with her. She died a few hours later. There was nothing more I could do. The family never rang me back and I could not contact them as they had rung from a private number.

The only photo with this update is what I found on the joey's toenails. To my utter disgust she had painted nails. This is the second time I have come across this in animals handed in to me. This joey had been treated as a toy!! Joeys are not toys that children should be attempting to rear!!!

Please, do not hold onto animals and try to raise them. It takes a great deal of experience to rear a kangaroo or wallaby and they need experienced carers. I get a couple of these a year, animals handed in to me that have gone downhill and the people don't know what to do. They are usually too far gone to help. Get the animals to someone who knows what to do and is licensed, or drop them off at your nearest vet. They will find a suitable carer.

For advice and rescues 0412 665 424.
