‘Why aren’t my chickens laying eggs at the moment?’ Is something I am getting asked almost everyday at the moment
There are a couple of reasons for no eggs at this time of the year.
Most heritage breed chickens will start a winter moult sometime around Easter (my Silver Spangled Hamburgs used to stop each year Easter weekend & you could set the calendar by it 😂) so their bodies can have a well deserved break before the upcoming breeding season.
So until the Winter solstice (21/6) & the days once again start to lengthen, you will only get the odd egg.
There are however exceptions to this & particularly the commercial breeds as they are bred for rapid continuous laying but this comes with a cost to the hens shorter lifespan & laying years.

😢 My beautiful Jemima 🪿 was taken by something last night as she sat on her eggs. This will put a delay on my other poultry breeding for a while until we fortify our pens or stop the threat.

With the number of enquirers up lately just thought I’d update everyone.
I have no POL’s available at the moment & with most of the hens still off the lay for their winter break, hatching won’t start for about another month.
