🐾 Meet Snow! ❄️🐶

This gorgeous 13-week-old Husky visited us for her puppy vaccinations and a nail trim — and she absolutely stole our hearts (Look at Dr Vanessa, smoochy cuddles)💙

Vaccinations are one of the most important steps in giving puppies the best start in life. They help protect against serious and potentially life-threatening diseases, allowing your puppy to safely explore the world as they grow.

But this visit was also a great reminder about something many pet owners don’t think about early enough… handling your puppy’s feet! 🐾

Getting puppies used to having their paws touched from a young age can make a HUGE difference as they get older. Gentle handling at home helps make future nail trims:
✔ Less stressful
✔ Safer for your pet
✔ Easier for owners and veterinary staff
✔ A more paws-itive experience overall

Try spending a few minutes each day:
🐾 Touching and holding their paws
🐾 Gently pressing on their toes
🐾 Rewarding calm behaviour with treats and praise

Small positive experiences now can help prevent fear and anxiety around nail trims later in life.

Meet our very happy friend, Benji who was in need of a sedated ear clean with our amazing vet, Dr Vanessa 🐶
People may ask "Why Does My Dog Need Sedation for Ear Cleaning?" 👂

Dogs with painful or infected ears are often very sensitive around their head and ears. Trying to clean deep inside the ear canal while they are uncomfortable can be stressful, painful, and sometimes unsafe for both the pet and the veterinary team.

Sedation allows us to:
✔ Thoroughly examine the ear canal
✔ Safely remove painful debris and discharge
✔ Apply medication properly where it needs to go
✔ Reduce stress and discomfort for your dog

One important complication we commonly see is an aural haematoma — a painful swelling of the ear flap caused by blood vessels bursting from excessive head shaking or scratching. The more likely dogs are to shake their heads the more likely they are to develop this condition, which often requires surgery to repair.

If your dog is showing signs of ear discomfort such as:
👂 Head shaking
👂 Scratching at ears
👂 Bad smell from ears
👂 Redness or discharge

…it’s best to book an examination sooner rather than later. If you notice any of the above, call us on 07 3200 6045.

In honour of National Bulldog Day this week 🐾💙

We’re celebrating some of our favourite wrinkly faces - Eva, Dobby and Cash - who always bring a smile to our team here at Marsden Vet Surgery!

Bulldogs are full of personality and charm, but as a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, they often need a little extra care and attention to stay happy and healthy. Regular check-ups are so important to keep on top of their breathing, skin, and overall wellbeing.

If you have a bulldog at home, now’s the perfect time to book in their health check. We also offer BOAS surgery with a visiting specialist for pets who may need extra support with their breathing.

Give your bulldog some extra love this week -they deserve it! 🐶✨

As the weather cools down and we head into autumn 🍂, it’s the perfect time to give your furry friends a little extra care and attention.

Here are a few seasonal tips to keep your pets happy and healthy:
🐾 Keep them warm – shorter days and cooler nights mean cosy bedding is a must
🐾 Watch for seasonal shedding and brush regularly
🐾 Stay on top of parasite prevention – fleas and ticks can still be active
🐾 Adjust exercise times to make the most of the cooler temps
🐾 Check paws for dryness or cracks as the air gets cooler

A quick reminder to keep your pets safe (and calm) over the long weekend:

• Keep chocolate out of reach 🍫❌ – it’s toxic to pets
• Keep hot cross buns and raisins away 🚫🍇 – they can be very harmful to pets
• Secure Easter eggs, wrappers and treats 🥚🎁 to avoid choking or blockages
• Avoid xylitol 🚫 (found in sugar-free products)

For anxious pets 💛:
• Set up a quiet, safe space 🏡 away from guests
• Stick to their usual routine ⏰
• Provide a favourite toy or comfort item 🧸

If you’re concerned your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, contact emergency veterinary services immediately 🚑

We will be closed from 3rd–6th April for the Easter break and will return to our usual operating hours from Tuesday 7th April.
