🐠 SHOULD I GET A FISH TANK FOR MY CHILD? 🐠

Short answer? Yes… if you go in with the right expectations.

💙 A fish tank can be an amazing way for kids to learn responsibility, patience and care for animals, and honestly, there’s something pretty calming about watching fish glide around after a long day...

But here in Western Australia, there are a few important things to think about before diving in.

☀️ WA weather matters

Our summers can heat up small tanks very quickly, especially if they’re near windows or outside areas. A stable water temperature is one of the biggest keys to happy, healthy fish.

🐟 Best beginner fish for WA families

Not all fish are “easy care” fish! Some good beginner options include:
• Goldfish – popular, pretty, hardy and long-lived - up to 10 to 15 years with proper care (but they need more space than most people think!)
• White Cloud Mountain Minnows – resilient, inexpensive and thrive without a heater
• Guppies – colourful, active and fun for kids to watch

🚫 Tiny bowls are not ideal. Fish are much healthier in properly filtered tanks with room to swim.

👍 Why families love fish tanks:
• encourages routine and responsibility
• scientific studies have shown that fish tanks can significantly reduce anxiety and stress for children
• great way to introduce children to nature and science
• no fur allergies to worry about

🤔 The reality check:
Fish still need regular care. That means:
• regular water testing
• filter maintenance
• partial water changes
• proper feeding (not just “sprinkle and hope” 😅)
•

And yes… parents usually end up doing most of the cleaning.

💡 Our biggest tip?

Start with a decent-sized tank rather than the tiniest one on the shelf. Bigger tanks are actually easier to keep stable and healthy.
