I did an inspection recently and pulled out this frame. My first thought was 'that's a terrible brood pattern - maybe they're queenless.'

And then I looked at it in the sun - the whole frame was full of larvae! From teeny 3 day old larvae to 8 or 9 day old larvae nearly ready to be capped.

We purchase our queens off a local supplier and this is the typical quality we get - solid brood patterns and strong, healthy hives.

This week we've got a new market happening. Come along and support the new night market at Priors Creek Live in Atherton. We won't have our bulk drums, but we'll have our usual array of honey and beekeeping supplies. The market runs from 5pm-8pm - we hope to see you there 🐝🍯

We often get asked - is your honey pure and raw. And we always answer that our honey is simply filtered - nothing else.

People often ask why we filter or tell us we should leave it natural.

This is what the filter captures - its a gooey mess of bee parts (legs, wings, often times entire bees), pollen, small hive beetle, wax cappings, and whatever else might have ended up in the hive.

Safe to say, I think most of our customers would prefer that we continue to filter the honey before bottling it 🤣

Did you know - Bees can carry up to 35% of their own body weight in pollen.

Look at how full the 'pollen pants' are on all these hard working girls!

Pollen is the primary food source of a hive, so all of that is being taken in, mixed with a bit of water or nectar and stored as 'bee bread' in cells for future use.
