Look at this cutie!!!! My private lesson today was with Carlo, Leanne, Isla, Ava and the very sweet Winnie. Winnie is a 13 week old Cavoodle.

The family is new to owning a puppy, so I went through everything with them. From toileting, sleeping arrangements, routines to diet, etc. It was a great lesson.

Winnie is in a loving home and I look forward to seeing her at my small breed group lessons in the near future.

We can’t always be expected to give our dogs what we don’t even give ourselves. Every opportunity that we stop, becomes an opportunity to consume more information, but we rarely take time to process it.

Just like us our dogs need time, to figure things out, think about what’s been asked, understand new things. And they are better at it than us if we just give them the time.
So let their processing time, be yours too.

Find exercises on the membership to help you both find time and quiet in your mind to really connect.

I had 11 group members turn up today. I was a bit worried the weather would be horrible, but the sun was shining. It has given us a false sense of security of what is to come (really terrible weather due this afternoon).

In puppy school, we did some lead work where I went through different methods of helping those dealing with dogs that pull on the lead. A work in progress!

We then did some work in a circle with a few more advanced dogs in the centre. This helps teach our dogs that they won’t meet every dog they come across. A really important lesson and a challenging one which everyone took in their stride.
We then did some weaving and then played chicken in the cone. I paired the smell of peppermint oil with chicken or fish. I will develop this over time so that when the dogs smell peppermint, they sit and indicate where it is. Really fun exercise.

I had a great time and look forward to our next lesson.

Ok, so I am going to call it for the small dog group lesson on Sunday (the one held in the Manjimup Heritage Park). The weather is going to be dangerous, so I will be cancelling it. I will text everyone letting them know.

I think every dog owner feels the same.

Very important information.

Very important information.

I can. But I’m not going to.

I don’t want your dog to shrink away while I insist on ruffling their hair up.
They don’t need me to touch them to prove “I’m safe”.

What they actually need is for me to keep my hands in my pocket and wait for some signals of consent.

We have a tactile “obsession” when it comes to dogs.

Maybe it starts when they’re puppies and their squidginess draws our hands in.
100% their fur and wee fat rolls combined are irresistible.
From there though, it can become a habit.

We see a person up the street we haven’t seen for a while, stop for a chat and our hand goes down to pat while we say “Aww whose this wee girl”.
That’s how easy these habits grow.

They’re ingrained.

How about we start to normalise not touching?
And start normalising watching for consent.
