Please be aware of botulism outbreaks around Perth during this long heat wave.

Today our members and volunteers from Friends of Mary Carroll Wetland have collected over a dozen deceased waterfowl and five paralysed waterfowl from one wetland in Gosnells. And there are sure to be more botulism cases to come over the next days to weeks.

The five patients in care with botulism have received activated carbon via gastric tube, electrolytes and eye ointments. They have already shown great improvement and will hopefully continue to recover so over the next few days. However we were lucky with these five and were able to start treatment quickly. The other dozen were sadly already deceased.

So please, be aware of this disease that can affect ANY ANIMAL if the toxin is infested, including pets and people should they drink from toxic lakes or eat affected waterfowl. Never allow pets or children to drink from lakes around Perth (especially during warmer months).

Went out last night to relocate a snake who had hitched a ride on a bean bag and made its way into the bedroom.

Some quick thinking had the snake trapped in there, with a towel against the door frame.

When we arrived we then entered an eye spy scenario of high risk and high stakes. Tentatively shifting boxes and peaking under beds, lifting up the beanbag from the floor, inside bags, looking anywhere a small snake might hide.

We realised there was only one place it could be. Behind and under the large chest of drawers. After briefly rearranging the room we were able to coax the snake out from under the chest of drawers and into the snake bag without a hitch. 🐍

Went for a drive after the power went out last night. Was very excited to see a Western Ringtail Possum out in the wild for the very first time.

However this possum was out in the middle of the road, we were able to drive right up to it, it was evident then that there was something wrong. Upon closer inspection we could see that it's eyes were milky white, it could hear us but could not see us. Due to being concerned for her welfare, we decided to catch her up and take her to a rescue.

The Rescue will assess today whether she is a good candidate for eye surgery, however she is also carrying pouch young.

Hopefully all works out for this strong mama.

Western Ringtail possums are Critically endangered, found only as far north as Dawesville through to Albany. There is estimated to being only 3000 of these guys left in the wild.

If I had not stopped to pick up this girl, 2 of their lives may have been lost.

If you see a Western Ringtail Possum, you can report sightings to the DBCA, if you are concerned for their welfare, you can contact the Wildcare Helpline.

Timely reminder that with the warmer weather we will be seeing more of our scaley friends.

With today being a bit warmer I saw not 1 but 2 of these guys successfully crossing the KWINANA FREEWAY 😱 between KULIJA ROAD and SAFETY BAY ROAD. I have also seen them crossing MANDURAH ROAD between WATERSUN DRIVE and MANDURAH TERRACE. So if you're driving along in these areas, be sure to be on the lookout for them! 🐢👀

These guys are potentially heading back to their waterways after nesting but they can be nesting anytime from August through to January.

However, if you do see a turtle, especially, along a busy road, do stop and check that it's okay, as a cracked shell can be fatal without medical attention. If you also see a deceased turtle please also collect that as well and take to your nearest vet as it is possible to salvage any eggs they may have. 🐢

Thankfully the 2 I saw today were both well so after picking this one up off the middle of the Kulija road freeway entry ramp, and a quick photo 😅 I sent it on it's way ❤

With spring comes lots of new babies, so make sure you are aware of what to do if you come across a lost baby bird. If unsure call 😊🐥

Don't be a "Birdnapper"....

Every year baby birds are birdnapped! They are removed from their homes unnecessarily much to the dismay of their frantic parents...

Sometimes, Mum & Dad just pop off to the shops to get some food and come back to find their baby missing!

*Before removing the bird, check that it actually needs your assistance...

*Monitor from a distance to see if Mum & Dad return (give it at least an hour before panicking).

*If exposed, pop it somewhere a little safer, in the nearest tree, under a shrub or in a make shift nest.

If you aren't sure you can contact your local Shelter/Rehabilitator or the Wildcare Helpline on 94749055

Very important reminder. If you have a possum in your roof put a light up there, plug up the hole and the let the possum move out on its own or better yet provide them an alternative such as amazing handmade possum boxes.

It is illegal to relocate possums off your property. Due to declining habitat, possums are in direct competition with each other for available nest hollows in trees. If you relocate a possum to a good tree, chances are theres already a possum living there. Possums are highly territorial and will fight to keep there trees so if you relocate the possum you are putting it and any others possums at risk.

Plus in the south west of Western Australia we are trying to protect the Western Ringtail possum which is listed as critically endangered amd is in direct competion with the more common brushtail possum.

We need to learn to live with them, so if you live in possum habitat, do them the favour and put up a couple nest boxes for them. 😊

Had the fun opportunity tonight to relocate the tiniest dugite from inside someone's house in Secret Harbour. Fortunately, they were quick off the mark and had separated their dogs from the area. By keeping an eye on the snake she was able to see it enter the toilet area and successfully trap it in there with a towel against the door frame.

This was by far the fastest and easiest relocation I have done so far and I commend the home owner for their quick actions that made it so easy.

And another snake happily back in the bush 😁🐍

Went out last night to check on a tiger snake that had potentially been caught in the rain. Poor thing had barely moved 5 metres within the half hour it took for us to find him, he was that cold.

After my partner took these awesome photos we moved him out of the clearing and back into the shelter of the nearby bushes.

As the weather starts to cool down, it is important ro remain aware of our locals. Tiger snakes and Dugites in particular are likely to come out of hiding on a decently sunny day to sun bake so be sure to keep an eye out for them.

And for snakes like this one, if the weather changes quickly on them they can find themselves without the energy to escape so be sure to let someone know so we can keep all our wildlife safe.
