If your dog suddenly becomes anxious, aggressive, restless or withdrawn, it could be due to a lot of things. Sudden behavioural change might indicate pain, illness, toxin exposure, neurological issues or fear. 🐶

Often, behaviour is one of the earliest signs that something is wrong, because it’s a reflection of how dogs are feeling at any point in time. A prompt vet check can help identify the cause. 💛

If your dog’s behaviour has changed quickly, book a vet check as soon as possible.

Tail pull injuries, such as those that occur after car accidents or getting the tail caught, can affect nerves controlling the bladder, bowel and hindlimbs. This is because tails are part of the spine and contain sensitive nerves. 😿

Signs of a serious tail pull injury include drooping tails, incontinence or difficulty walking. Any of these signs indicates an emergency requiring immediate vet assessment.

Tail injuries can be serious. Don’t delay vet treatment. ⚠️

After a dental procedure, pets may have tender gums or extraction sites. Good home care supports dental healing. Soft food, pain relief as prescribed, monitoring for bleeding or swelling and preventing chewing on hard toys are key. 🦷

The first couple of days after a dental are key to a good recovery. If your pet seems lethargic, stops eating, or you notice bleeding or their breath worsens, contact the clinic promptly after a dental. 💛

Dog parks can be great fun, but they’re not risk-free. Hazards include unpredictable interactions, disease exposure, injuries from rough play and over-excited dogs ignoring recall cues. 🐕

As vets, it’s not uncommon that we see dog fight injuries resulting from dog parks, unfortunately. Off-leash fun requires careful supervision. Always supervise your dog closely, ensure vaccinations are current and choose quieter times if your dog is shy or anxious. 🌼

With wet season in full swing, sudden storms can spell stress for some pets.

Storm anxiety for pets is a serious condition with varying levels of effect. For some pets, the levels of fear and anxiety can cause them great harm through physical injury and mental stress.

Symptoms of storm anxiety in pets can include:
⚡️Panting and excessive drooling
⚡️Pacing, unsettled behaviour
⚡️Trembling or shaking
⚡️Destructive behaviour (such as chewing or pawing at objects to the point of harm)
⚡️Vocalisations and clingy behaviour

There are a number of management systems available to help your pet feel brave when storms are approaching. These can include:
✅Keeping your pet crated to avoid running away or destructive behaviours
✅Confining them to a safe place within your home
✅Playing music to assist in breaking up the noise
✅Applying a ThunderShirt to assist in anxiety reduction
✅Calming supplements and diffusers such as Zylkene and Adaptil

In extreme cases, medication is available to assist your pet and ensure no harm comes to them during these times. These will require a visit with your regular veterinarian prior to being prescribed.

Our informed team are skilled in stress reduction and are always happy to assist with any enquiries regarding your pet's behaviour. To discuss options for your pet or to make an appointment, contact our friendly team today!

Heading back to work? Keep your dog stimulated with puzzle feeders, scent games, chew toys and rotating enrichment activities. 🐾

Simple enrichment helps dogs adjust to routine changes. Without stimulation, some dogs can become destructive if bored. Short training sessions before leaving and midday breaks from a walker or sitter can also help reduce anxiety in certain dogs.

Need help choosing the right enrichment for your dog? Book a consult with our team. 😊

A cat suddenly showing aggression is worthy of investigation. Aggression can be a sign of discomfort or stress. Possible causes include pain, fear, overstimulation, territorial behaviour or illness. 🐱

Sudden aggression shouldn’t be ignored. It’s important to rule out medical issues first, then look at environmental or behavioural triggers. 💛

If your cat’s behaviour has changed suddenly, book a vet check today.

Caring for the needs of all animals for over 60 years

Tableland Veterinary Service is committed to delivering world class, compassionate veterinary care, training, advice and research, for all animal species. From beef cattle through to pets and injured wildlife, our expert team provide only the highest standard of veterinary care.

An Atherton Tablelands veterinary clinic started operation in Malanda in 1952, and was originally operated as a branch practice from Townsville (it was the only veterinary clinic north of Townsville for many years). Tableland Veterinary Service officially began operation in 1977. Bill Tranter and Ian Hosie began their current partnership in 1978 and have worked together as business partners for over 40 years. More recently, directors Frank Condon (2002), Tamara Olley-Dredge (2011), Mick Ruppin (2012), Ryan Cockrem (2012), Stephanie Williams (2017) and John Hosie (2017) have joined the partnership. Over 40 years the practice has grown to include six clinics in Weipa, Atherton, Ravenshoe, Charters Towers, Malanda and Gordonvale. Although the practice has grown and now includes up to 60 staff, spread over 2000 kms, we are still a close ‘family’ and enjoy the intimacy of a smaller clinic.

Since 1977 more than fifty veterinarians have worked in the practice supported over the years by many dedicated nurses, receptionists, office staff and technicians. Hundreds of veterinary students have also undertaken part of their veterinary training within the practice. In recent years, TVS has become intimately involved in the training of veterinary students from James Cook University. This has helped our veterinarians to develop their skills and knowledge and makes TVS a unique centre of excellence for clients and their animals.
