Question:

"I’m having a hard time with compacted soil, despite adding organic matter every year. The plants and trees seem to have stopped growing, or are growing very slowly. Is there anything I can do to bring the soil back to good health?"

Answer:

Compacted soil can occur for a number of reasons, so the best solution depends on what has caused the issue. If your soil is heavy, wet or difficult to work with, the key is to improve aeration and soil structure by incorporating plenty of organic matter.

One of the best ways to do this is by working CHOCKABLOK Super Compost through the top 10cm of soil.

If the area has become waterlogged, the soil may have turned anaerobic, meaning oxygen levels are low and harmful bacteria can begin to thrive. Applying POPUL8 can help reintroduce beneficial soil biology and restore balance to the soil.

Mulching around trees and garden beds is also highly beneficial, particularly with an organic mulch such as Whoflungdung. Mulch helps regulate soil moisture, protect soil structure and encourage ongoing biological activity.

For particularly heavy clay soils, applying gypsum especially in a liquid form can also assist by helping to open up the soil and reduce compaction over time.

When planting in the future, consider “mounding” trees slightly above the existing soil level. Raising the planting area improves drainage around the root zone and can greatly reduce the risk of future compaction and waterlogging issues
