๐๐ Meet Ethel โ our little Dachshund superstar who has completely stolen our hearts ๐๐
A few weeks ago, Ethel was presented to us after suddenly developing severe difficulty walking. By the time she arrived, her condition had rapidly deteriorated and she was no longer able to walk on her own.
Ethel was diagnosed with a Grade 3โ4 Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) injury. IVDD occurs when one of the cushioning discs between the vertebrae ruptures and presses on the spinal cord, causing pain, weakness and, in severe cases, paralysis. Unfortunately, Dachshunds are one of the breeds most commonly affected.
A CT scan revealed a significant disc extrusion between the T11 and T12 vertebrae. What made Ethel's case particularly challenging was that the extrusion was very central. Most disc extrusions occur predominantly to the left or right side of the spinal canal, allowing easier surgical access. Central extrusions can be much more difficult to remove and, in some cases, may require surgery from both sides of the spine.
Following surgery, post-operative imaging showed that approximately 75% of the disc material had been removed, although some compression remained. After discussion with specialist surgeons, all options were considered, including the possibility of a second procedure. Together with Ethel's family, we decided to carefully monitor her recovery before pursuing further surgery.
And then Ethel started proving just how remarkable she is. โจ
Fast forward a few weeks and Ethel is absolutely thriving. Thanks to some extra time spent with us, she's become a beloved member of the Midcoast Vets family and tackles her rehabilitation exercises like a championโoften while wearing her adorable bee outfit.
Ethel's recovery is a wonderful reminder of how resilient IVDD patients can be. While surgery is often a critical part of treatment, dedicated nursing care, rehabilitation, patience, and determination all play an enormous role in achieving the best possible outcome.
We're incredibly proud of you, Ethel. Keep buzzing along, little bee! ๐โจ
