🐴🦷 𝐅𝐔𝐍 𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐘🦷🐴

This hungry gelding managed to get his upper canine tooth caught in a fence, leaving his owner noticing blood coming from his mouth!

Although a small portion of the tooth could be seen initially, closer examination revealed that the tooth had actually been displaced, with painful bruising and a laceration to the roof of his mouth.

After sedation and a thorough oral examination, we took dental radiographs to investigate further. These revealed that the upper canine tooth had been pushed forwards and upwards from its normal position, with a small fracture to the tip of the crown.

Given the significant pain and displacement, we recommended extraction of the affected tooth. He was given pain relief and stayed with us overnight and we successfully performed the extraction the following day. 💙

A change in appetite, attitude or willingness under saddle can raise questions about ulcers. Those changes deserve attention, but they can also have other explanations.

👆When a horse shows these signs, gastric ulcers are often high on the list of owner concerns.

🐴 Gastric disease can be influenced by changes in feeding, forage access, workload, travel, stabling, social environment and the horse’s physiological response to stress.
It may also exist alongside pain elsewhere in the body.

If a horse is coping with ongoing musculoskeletal discomfort, increased training demands or another health problem, treating the stomach alone may not address the full picture. 🐎

🌟 That can leave us managing the consequence without understanding what may be contributing to it.

At Elite Equine, we want to ask: 🧐
• What has changed in this horse’s routine?
• Is their feeding supporting their workload?
• Are there long periods without forage?
• Could pain or discomfort be adding to their stress load?
• Are there other areas of the horse that need investigating?

🥰 Foal Friday 🐎

We were lucky enough to have this friendly filly staying in at the clinic with us, while her mum was being treated by our vets here at Elite.

🐴 She bonded quickly with the staff and we miss those little hooves skipping around the clinic.
🐎🌞 She is home with mum, enjoying these beautiful spring days.

🐎 But sometimes the first change is felt under saddle.

Your horse may: 👇
• Feel less willing to move forward
• Become more reactive when being saddled or girthed
• Struggle to maintain their usual performance
• Seem less settled in their work
• Tire sooner than expected
• Simply feel different without an obvious explanation

None of these signs automatically mean gastric ulcers.
They can also be associated with musculoskeletal discomfort, dental problems, saddle fit, training, management or several factors occurring together.
That is exactly why they are worth noticing.

Changes in ridden behaviour and performance are clues, not diagnoses.
They tell us that something may have changed, but they don’t tell us where the answer lies.

𝐈𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞. 🐴

A horse returning from a spell may suddenly have: 👇
• More work
• Earlier starts
• A new or increased hard-feed ration
• Different feeding times
• More travelling
• Days spent at clinics or competitions
• Longer periods away from their usual pasture, paddock mates or forage

Each change may seem relatively small.
But together, they can affect more than fitness.

𝐀 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞’𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲. 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬.
👉 Chewing stimulates saliva, which helps buffer stomach acid.
👉 The forage itself also forms a fibrous layer within the stomach, helping reduce acid splashing onto the more vulnerable upper stomach lining, particularly during exercise.
🌟 Lucerne can provide additional buffering because of its naturally higher calcium and protein content.

This doesn’t mean horses shouldn’t come back into work, travel or compete.
🌟 It simply means that when we increase their workload or energy intake, we should think about the whole routine surrounding it.

Before the season becomes busy, consider: 👇
🐴 Has their feed changed suddenly?
🐴 Are hard feeds becoming larger or more frequent?
🐴 Are they spending longer without hay or pasture?
🐴 Will they eat and drink normally away from home?
🐴 What parts of their usual routine can remain consistent?

🤯 A horse may chew approximately 25 million times every year.
Their teeth continually erupt as the grinding surfaces wear, while changes in diet, age and chewing patterns can affect how evenly that wear occurs.
Yet for many horses, we only properly examine their mouth once a year.

Most of us wouldn’t expect a car to cover kilometres year after year without stopping to inspect and maintain the parts doing the work.
✅ Your horse’s mouth deserves the same attention.

Teeth wear unevenly. Gaps can develop. Feed can become trapped, and the gums and supporting tissues can become inflamed.
All while a horse continues eating normally and maintaining good body condition.

🌟 Horses are remarkably good at adapting. They may change how or where they chew long before they begin dropping feed or losing weight.

A change under saddle could be influenced by the mouth, feet, muscles, joints, back, stomach, saddle or workload.
Sometimes several smaller factors are contributing at once.
That’s why one of the most important parts of investigating a horse that isn’t going well is resisting the temptation to decide on the answer too early.

A horse coming back into work might be sensitive around the girth or simply not performing as expected. Ulcers may be part of the picture, but those signs don’t tell us the whole story.
