🍉 WHY I’M FEEDING MY DOG WATERMELON THIS SUMMER

Watermelon isn’t just a refreshing summer treat—it’s packed with nutrients that can benefit your dog’s health. 🐶❤️

Here are a few reasons it’s one of my favorite seasonal snacks:

🍉 💦 It’s about 92% water.
Perfect for helping your pup stay hydrated during hot summer days.

❤️ 🫀 One of nature’s richest sources of L-citrulline.
Dogs use citrulline to help support healthy circulation, heart health, and mobility. Canine studies have found this pathway is altered in certain heart diseases, highlighting its importance for cardiovascular health.

💧 🩺 Can help reduce bladder stone–forming crystals.
A small peer-reviewed canine study found that dogs given a watermelon extract beverage had fewer calcium oxalate and struvite urine crystals after 3 months. These crystals are the building blocks of many bladder stones.

🛡️ 🍅 Rich in lycopene.
Watermelon is one of the richest fruit sources of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage.
👀 🥕 Packed with beta carotene:
This Vitamin A precursor supports healthy vision, skin, and immune function.

🍉 🤯 Here’s a fun fact:
The white rind (just beneath the green skin) actually contains more L-citrulline than the pink flesh. While most dogs won’t enjoy chewing the rind, it’s where much of this unique amino acid is naturally concentrated.

🐶 How much watermelon can dogs eat?

Watermelon should be an occasional treat. A good rule is to keep treats under 10% of your dog’s daily calories.

A practical serving guide:

🐾 Under 10 lb (4.5 kg): 1–2 small cubes
🐾 10–25 lb (4.5–11 kg): 2–4 cubes
🐾 25–50 lb (11–23 kg): ½–1 cup
🐾 Over 50 lb (23+ kg): 1–2 cups

✅ remove seeds and the tough green rind, which can be difficult to digest.

Ticks Are Out -Very Early This Year!
Although it's still mid winter, the longer days and the recent rain have provided perfect conditions for these pesky critters. These nasty little creatures can be very dangerous to our furry family members. SASH reported that they treated over 50 cases of tick paralysis last winter!
Paralysis ticks are a small insect, with a round blue/grey coloured body that feed on blood from animals. The natural host of the tick is the bandicoot, hence ticks are commonly picked up in bushland and grassland areas. The juveniles generally start to emerge in late winter, especially triggered by rain and the longer daylight.
Paralysis ticks are very dangerous because they cause paralysis and sometimes death, even after protracted and expensive treatment. They can also carry a variety of blood borne illnesses. Paralysis ticks are a life threatening parasite and cannot be effectively controlled by natural means in most situations. Effective and appropriate prevention is definitely needed. Discuss what is most appropriate for your situation with your vet. It is very important to seek professional advice and to also regularly check your pets for ticks by running your hands over their body and checking for any irregular lumps and bumps on a daily basis, especially around the head, neck and a**l regions. Avoid off lead in bushland areas where possible.

Now is the time to discuss this with your vet if you haven't already.
We offer short consults in person or via phone to discuss prevention so get in touch if you need some advice! In low risk situations our essential oil Bugs-Away Spray is available to buy in our online store that can be of assistance to reduce risk of attachment.

Research shows omega-3s can significantly improve skin and allergy issues in dogs, with supportive evidence in cats. Studies report less itching, scratching, and hair loss, plus better skin barrier function and shinier coats, often summarized as up to 50–60% improvement. These benefits come from marine-based EPA and DHA, not plant oils like flax, h**p, coconut or chia, which dogs convert poorly and cats barely at all. Always choose responsibly sourced, third-party tested marine oils, ideally in glass.

Feeding bioavailable omega-3s helps reduce inflammation, support skin, joints, and immune health, and nourish the body at a cellular level. That’s why Dr. Karen Becker developed ROE MEGA™—a veterinary-formulated blend of phospholipid-rich caviar oil with EPA and DHA from anchovies, sardines, and mackerel, enhanced with astaxanthin for stability and antioxidant support.

🐟🥚👉 If you want to explore a science-backed fish oil option for your small dog or cat, comment ROE and we’ll send a link straight to your DMs.

As we all know the fuel crisis has impacted everyone across different platforms, with price increases and delivery difficulties. It has also affected me at the shop. While I aim to keep prices as low as possible, my current prices are no longer sustainable. I am currently working with suppliers to come to a solution that suits as many as possible. It may be that we have a slightly lower grade meat but also have the option for people to have the higher at a dearer price. Another problem I have been inflicted with is "FORTNIGHTLY" deliveries(out of my control). This is a logistical nightmare for freezer storage as well as people wanting fresh weekly. Id like people to be a little patient while I come to a solution on restructuring the way I run my business. Kind regards Jodie and the Raw Attitude team
