At The Critter Cave Rescue Inc, we know firsthand how quickly veterinary bills can add up when you’re dedicated to helping animals in need.

Just look at this transformation! 😍

One of our lovely clients came to us for a much-needed grooming session, and what a difference it made!

This gorgeous guinea pig had a heavily tangled and matted coat that needed careful attention. With patience and a gentle approach, we removed the matted fur to help make their coat more manageable and comfortable. 💛

✨ Why is grooming so important?

Long-haired guinea pigs require regular coat maintenance. When fur becomes severely matted, it can pull on the skin, trap dirt and moisture, and cause discomfort.

Regular grooming helps keep your guinea pig’s coat manageable and gives you an opportunity to check for any underlying skin concerns.

At The Critter Cave Pet Care Services, we provide grooming services for our clients’ beloved pets, always putting their comfort and welfare first. 🥰

🐹💗 WHAT A HOLIDAY SEASON! 💗🐹

Our guinea pig boarding area was SUPER full these school holidays! 😳

At one point we had 70 piggies staying with us at once, with 80+ guinea pigs boarding throughout the holidays! 🐹🐹🐹

And when we think back to when we first started boarding from our garage… we’ve now doubled, if not tripled, our capacity! 🥹💗

Every piggie gets their own nice-sized setup, filled with toys, fleece and plenty of care — because boarding with us isn’t just about having somewhere safe to stay. We want them to be comfortable, enriched and treated like one of our own.

And WOW… it is FLAT OUT cleaning! 😂🧹

Honestly, we don’t know how rescues manage with 200+ guinea pigs in care. The amount of cleaning, feeding, laundry and daily care is HUGE! 😳

That’s exactly why we still keep our boarding numbers to a set capacity.

We could squeeze more in… but we never want numbers to come at the expense of cleanliness, enrichment, individual attention or quality of care. ❤️

More piggies doesn’t always mean better care — sometimes knowing your limit is what allows you to provide the BEST care. 🐹💗

🐾 COME SEE WHAT REALLY HAPPENS BEHIND THE SCENES! 🐾

We want to be completely transparent about what it’s like inside The Critter Cave Rescue ❤️💛

Our doors are open, and we are always happy for people to come and see the rescue, ask questions and learn about what we do.

But there’s something important to understand…

🧹 Animal rescues are messy!
🐹 Animals p**p.
🦜 Birds make mess.
🥬 Food gets everywhere.
💦 Water gets spilled.
🧺 Bedding needs changing.
🧼 Cages need cleaning — constantly!

We don’t want to hide that from anyone.

In fact, you’re welcome to visit while we’re cleaning, feeding and caring for the animals so you can see exactly what goes into running a rescue every day.

Our mornings can be particularly hectic. We may have volunteers who need one-on-one guidance, animals requiring individual care, cleaning and feeding to complete, intakes arriving and a whole list of jobs that need to happen before the day settles down.

If you’d like to see the rescue during the action — come in the morning! 😂 You might see us cleaning cages, feeding animals, helping volunteers and generally running around trying to get everything done.

If you’d prefer a quieter visit where we can sit down, have a proper chat and give you our full attention, we’re more than happy to arrange an afternoon visit when things have settled and there are fewer volunteers around.

❤️ We believe in being transparent.

What you see on our social media and website is only one part of rescue life. Behind those beautiful photos is a lot of cleaning, feeding, laundry, p**p, noise, volunteers, vet trips, animal emergencies and very long days.

And we’re proud to show you the real thing — not just the pretty parts. 🐾

🐹 A Gentle Reminder About Boarding Guinea Pigs 💚

Entrusting someone with your beloved guinea pigs is a big decision, and we are honoured every time a family chooses The Critter Cave.

As prey animals, guinea pigs are incredibly good at hiding illness. Many serious conditions show little to no signs until they become critical, which means that, despite appearing healthy on arrival, a guinea pig can sometimes develop a medical emergency very quickly.

When every guinea pig checks in for boarding, we complete an initial intake assessment, including:
🩺 A general health check
⚖️ Recording their arrival weight
👀 Assessing their body condition, appetite and behaviour
📝 Noting any existing health concerns or medications

Throughout their stay, we continue to monitor them closely with:
🌾 Daily observations of eating, drinking and toileting
⚖️ Regular weight checks, as weight loss is often one of the first signs that something may be wrong
🧼 Clean, disinfected enclosures using veterinary-grade F10 disinfectant
🌡️ Climate-controlled accommodation
🥬 Fresh hay, quality pellets, fresh vegetables and clean water
❤️ Prompt communication with owners if any concerns arise, with veterinary care sought where appropriate.

Despite these precautions, there are rare occasions where a guinea pig may sadly experience a medical emergency or pass away during boarding. This is one of the most heartbreaking parts of caring for these delicate animals.

Please understand that these situations are extremely rare, but unfortunately they can happen anywhere—even at home or under veterinary care. Guinea pigs are fragile animals, and some illnesses progress rapidly despite receiving appropriate care.

Every guinea pig that stays with us is treated as though they were one of our own. If the unthinkable does happen, we grieve alongside their family and will always be transparent, compassionate and supportive.

Thank you for trusting us with your precious little companions. We remain committed to providing the highest standard of care, monitoring and welfare throughout every boarding stay. 💚

Yes we do pretty much all exotics! Including lizards like blue tongues and bearded dragons

Occasionally their nails may become too sharp or overgrown and need trimming

Dazza had a bath today with a pedicure/manicure and was very well behaved 🤩
