➡️ When I send my USAR dog into a tunnel to search, he goes without hesitation. Not because he is fearless. Because he has learned, through hundreds of experiences, that I do not put him into situations he cannot handle.

Trust like this is built deliberately:

• Every early search are within a dog’s capability
• When something is too much, we step back, no exceptions
• The dog’s signals are always listened to, not pushed through
• The difficulty grows only as fast as their confidence does

🤔 This may look nothing like anything a pet dog will ever face. But the principle is identical.

⚠️ When you put your dog into a situation they are not ready for, like the busy pub, the dog park, the children’s birthday party, and override the signals that tell you it is too much, you are spending trust you may not have yet built.

Advocacy is NOT overprotection. It is the foundation that makes everything else possible.

💪 The dog who’s confidence is built without being pushed past what they can handle is the dog who will follow you into the hard things when it matters.

Protect the trust first. Everything else is built on top of it.

🚨Curiosity is a welfare issue.

Not a nice-to-have, not a buzzword, but a direct line to how well an animal gets seen, understood, and helped.

➡️ A lack of curiosity in a professional doesn’t stay contained to their own learning. It often shows up in the training: stress read as stubbornness, shutdown mistaken for calm, pain dismissed as attitude.

⚠️ Not asking questions may make us feel safe and comfortable, but there are consequences that often negatively affect welfare.

Real curiosity looks like:

• Asking what a technique costs a dog emotionally, not just whether it “works”

• Being willing to be wrong about something you’ve taught for years

• Choosing training that challenges you, not training that just confirms what you already believe

🧠 This weekend was a reminder of why staying a student matters. Not for the certificate, for our canine partner, who deserve someone still asking better questions.

➡️ There’s a moment in a search where the dog’s whole body changes. The pace shifts, the head comes up, the tail goes wild, they are not searching anymore, they have found. For the missing person, that shift is the whole story.

🐕 We spend so much time talking about scent theory and training mechanics that it’s easy to forget what it actually means on the ground: a dog arriving like they have been looking for you specifically.

⚠️ None of that happens without deliberate, relationship based training. It’s not about drilling obedience, it’s about building a dog who trusts the process enough to commit fully to it, and a handler who can read that commitment accurately.

That reliability is built through:

🧠 Systematic target odour discrimination work
📣 A clear, trained indication behaviour
💪 A strong working relationship between dog and handler

⚠️ We cannot see pain. We can only ever see symptoms it causes, and the signs are not always what we expect.

Some are physical, and even those get missed:

• Subtle lameness that comes and goes
• Muscle tension or tightness
• Flinching away from touch in a specific spot
• Moving more slowly, or hesitating before jumping or climbing stairs

🚨 But in some patients, the physical signs barely register. The only thing we can observe is a change in behaviour.

And that is where we often fail our pets.

➡️ Because a dog who has become snappy, withdrawn, or reactive, is often a dog who is hurting. A dog who suddenly guards their space, or no longer wants to be touched, or has lost interest in things they used to enjoy, that is a dog telling you something.

Not in a language that looks like pain. In the only language they have.

🧠 Behaviour is physiology. It is not separate from the body, it is produced by it. Which means that when behaviour changes, the body is always worth looking at first.

👉 If your dog has changed and you have been told it is a behaviour problem please rule out pain before you rule anything else in.

➡️ A client messaged me this week. She’d been unwell for three weeks: no walks, no big outings, just her and her dogs hanging out at home.

Her words: “They don’t seem to be missing their long walks. Because we’re not doing a lot, they’re much calmer.”

🎾 We tend to measure a good dog’s day by output: miles walked, sniffs had, toys thrown.

🧠 But nervous systems don’t regulate through more input. They regulate through rest.

🚨Constant stimulation, even the good kind, keeps the body in a state of alert.

😴 Decompression & proper, unstructured downtime is what lets the nervous system actually come back down.

Without it, arousal stacks. Day after day, a dog can look “fine” and still be running on empty.

⚠️ This is NOT a case against walks or enrichment. It’s a reminder that rest isn’t the thing your dog does *between* the important stuff. It is the important stuff.

👉 If your dog seems wired, is reactive, or they can’t switch off it might not be a training problem.

It might be rest problem.
