I wanted to share this post from The Mobile Vet Nurse. It is how I feel at the moment. Hitting an older milestone birthday this year, running and working in and on one business, starting my new business. Often hear the circus clown tune in my head as I juggle everything. I like this page with great, thoughtful articles if you would like to Like her page. Cheers, Sharon.
16 years in business… and I’ve been having a bit of a moment reflecting on the highs, the lows, the challenges, the wins and everything in between. Watching other vet nurses and groomers take the leap and work for themselves brings me so much joy, because I know exactly how exciting it is — but I also know the reality behind it. This year has honestly been one of the hardest. Every year I say, “next year will be my year”… but this year has challenged me on so many levels. My workload, my health, my energy — I’ve struggled with all of it. And the funny thing is, this is exactly the position I dreamed of. Booking 2–3 months ahead, having the most incredible clients and getting to do what I love every single day. But with that comes exhaustion, overwhelm and a massive toll on your health. When I started this business I was 16 years younger, and age definitely plays a part in the physicality of what I do. Small business is brutally tough. We are the groomer, the vet nurse, the accountant, the CEO, the marketer, the booking system, the reminder texts, the follow-ups, the customer service… basically EVERYTHING. So when you see a post from someone running their own little business, please remember there is usually a whole lot more going on behind the scenes than you see. We put our heart and soul into what we do. Our passion keeps us going, but sometimes it comes at a massive cost. So please, purchase from the small, local businesses — not the big corporates. Every dollar spent with a small business genuinely matters. It helps pay the bills, keeps the lights on and allows someone to keep doing what they love. 16 years on, I’m still here. Still learning, still adapting, still incredibly grateful… and still believe that, despite how bloody hard it can be, it’s worth it.
To those of you in small biz, grinding, hustling, and showing up every single day — even when it feels bloody hard… I see you. Keep going. You’re doing better than you think you are. ❤️
