A small cheese shop on an Amsterdam canal has tagged one of its 18-month-aged Gouda wheels as not for sale, because the shop's cat has been sleeping on it for two years.
The cat is a portly orange-and-white tomcat named Kees. He selected the top wheel of the display in the front window when he was a kitten, and he has not surrendered it.
The shop owner attempted to rotate the wheel into the sales rotation roughly six months in and Kees, who had been napping when the wheel was lifted, returned to the empty space and slept on the wooden shelf in protest for two days.
The owner returned the wheel. It has remained in place since, with a hand-written sign in Dutch tied to it explaining that it is no longer part of the inventory.
The cheese inside is now approximately 42 months old. The owner says he is not sure what the cheese is at this point. He says he does not intend to find out.
