Last week we had the team from Insight Mobile Veterinary Diagnostics come to our clinic and perform an on-site CT scan with their mobile CT truck. This was done for investigation of a nasal issue in one of our patients. Animals are placed under general anaesthesia for a CT scan to keep them nice and still.

We thought you may like to see how it looks when an animal has a CT scan. CT provides a 3D image and higher detail than X-rays, so it’s great to investigate the delicate structures of the nose and head.

Here at Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital, our vets have undertaken further study in ultrasound and cardiology.

We are able to offer point of care heart ultrasounds of dogs and cats, as well as ultrasound of the chest and abdomen.

Ultrasound helps us assess the structure and function of the heart, both in an emergency setting as well as forming a vital part of the investigation and staging of heart murmurs and heart disease in dogs and cats.

Although we are not a specialist cardiology service, we are lucky that Dr Kim has done additional study in this area 🫀🩺”

Just an alert that our Yarra Glen clinic will be closed Thursday 24th and Friday 25th due to the long weekend.

Our Lilydale Hospital will be closed Friday 25th due to the Grand Final public holiday. If you have a pet that needs a visit or medication to collect please give us a call before Friday. The hospital will reopen Saturday morning.

Vale Dr Ian Gunn

We are very sad to announce the passing of the wonderful Dr Ian Gunn, founder of Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital.

The clinic in Yarra Glen was originally known as Devondindi Transplants and B.S.I Breeding Services which is where Dr Gunn imported bovine semen and then sold it to breeding centres across Australia (assisted by nurse Louise who still works here to this day!). Ian was widely known as the cow guru and he did a lot of overseas consulting work in this field.

Ian then started the veterinary clinic in 1978 at Yarra Glen . It was known as Yarraview Vet Clinic. Dr Paul Martin came along as a locum vet in 1981 and never left! Ian purchased the property at Lilydale in 1984 and operated a four-room clinic/surgery out of the back room. Paul and Ian were business partners from 1986 to 1994, but Ian then stayed on as a consulting vet until about 2006. The clinic had a name change in the early 1990's to Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital, and underwent substantial renovations in 1999 to it's current state.

In the early 1980's Ian pioneered cattle embryo transfer when associated with Professor Alan Trounsen from Monash University who was developing the protocols for super ovulation in IVF in humans. Many of the exotic breeds of cattle from Europe such as Simmentals, Chianinas, and Charolais could only be introduced into Australia (because at that time one could not import live animals because of quarantine) through the use of AI and Frozen semen. Ian was at the forefront of all these new technologies. Then in the early 1990s Ian pioneered the freezing of Canine semen and the subsequent use of frozen canine semen especially imported semen from USA to expand the gene pool in domestic dogs. Most modern canine breeding programs have benefited from Ian's pioneering work and the vast knowledge he shared with many veterinarians (and all at the same time as running a typical large animal vet practice in the Yarra Valley!).

We give thanks to Dr Ian Gunn for his tireless and incredible veterinary career and for founding Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital.
