𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐀𝐘 𝐂𝐀𝐒𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐄𝐊
🔍 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐥𝐜𝐞𝐫

This week’s case highlights just how quickly an eye problem in a horse can become a serious emergency.

This racehorse presented to Golden Plains Equine with a severe melting corneal ulcer. A melting ulcer occurs when enzymes begin breaking down the corneal tissue, causing it to soften and deteriorate. Without rapid and aggressive treatment, the ulcer can progress to rupture of the eye and permanent loss of vision.

Due to the severity of this case, an SPL (subpalpebral lavage) tube was placed, allowing us to administer medication directly onto the eye without repeatedly opening the eyelids. This horse has required intensive treatment every two hours, around the clock.

We also enlisted the help of a specialist veterinary ophthalmologist, who has debrided the ulcer twice to remove unhealthy tissue and encourage the cornea to heal.

The great news is that all that hard work is paying off. The eye is now showing good vascularisation, with new blood vessels growing towards the affected area and the cornea continuing to heal.

At this stage, we are optimistic that we are on track to save the eye — and importantly for this horse, preserve its racing career.

Cases like this are a great reminder that squinting, tearing, swelling, cloudiness or an obviously painful eye in a horse should always be treated as urgent. With corneal disease, things can change remarkably quickly.

A fantastic effort from the entire GPE team providing intensive care day and night, together with our specialist ophthalmology support.

We often get asked why sedation and power tools are used during horse dental checks — here’s why:
🦷 𝙰 𝚂𝚊𝚏𝚎, 𝚂𝚝𝚛𝚎𝚜𝚜-𝙵𝚛𝚎𝚎 𝙴𝚡𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚎
Sedation helps your horse stay calm and still, making the experience safer for them, for us, and for you.
🦷 𝙰 𝚃𝚑𝚘𝚛𝚘𝚞𝚐𝚑 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝙲𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚎𝚝𝚎 𝙴𝚡𝚊𝚖
With sedation, we can safely open the mouth fully with a speculum, allowing us to carefully check all teeth — even the hard-to-reach back ones — and the soft tissues.
🦷 𝙱𝚎𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛, 𝙼𝚘𝚛𝚎 𝙿𝚛𝚎𝚌𝚒𝚜𝚎 𝚃𝚛𝚎𝚊𝚝𝚖𝚎𝚗𝚝
Using power tools while the horse is relaxed means we can smooth sharp points, balance the mouth, and correct any uneven wear precisely and comfortably.
🦷 𝚅𝚎𝚝𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚛𝚢 𝙴𝚡𝚙𝚎𝚛𝚝𝚒𝚜𝚎
Only vets can legally and safely sedate your horse, ensuring pain relief, careful monitoring, and treatment of any issues we find.
Good dental care isn’t just about rasping a few teeth — it’s about the whole mouth, your horse’s comfort, and long-term health. 🐴✨

Note:
If you have concerns about sedation or prefer your horse not to be sedated, that’s absolutely okay. We encourage you to discuss this with our vets at your appointment. Our team is committed to ensuring both you and your horse have a positive and comfortable experience, and we are more than happy to work with your individual needs and preferences.
