Many households have dogs and cats - Andrea Carne from Cattitude - Cat Behaviour Consultant (who is based in Tassie!!) is presenting a fantastic webinar for Pet Professional Guild Australia on how to introduce a new dog/puppy to your resident cat.

Click on the link below to register - its $20 for non-members

Don't miss this one.
Join us on October 29th for this Conference Presentation Reboot.

A large percentage of pet guardians like to have both cats and dogs in the home, but introductions don’t always go well and what was envisaged as a harmonious fur family quickly escalates into a battle between the species.

Such outcomes can be avoided (or at least kept to a minimum) with some careful preparation and a better understanding of the differing behavioural needs of the two species.

Long 5m leads have a lot of great benefits!

- They help provide safety while teaching recall in new environments
- Assists in loose lead walking training
- Allows freedom to roam and sniff safely

I have a waterproof 5, long lead from ACTIVE DOG that I love. Beach proof and easy to clean.

If you would like a 15% discount on the lead or other products from ActiveDog, use our special code at the checkout - HTAILS

Our Long Dog Lead is 3M & 5M in length and made of double sided neoprene making it a waterproof long dog lead. It is a lightweight long dog lead ideal for training dogs and puppies for recall training, or allowing dogs to roam in the outdoors, park or the beach, while still maintaining lead control.

Is your dog always sniffing or likes to chase things?

Use this to your advantage when training
For instance, you could use the high probability, rewarding behaviour of chasing a toy as a reinforcer for coming when called. (e.g. recall away from that chicken and you get to play with the flirt pole).

Check out this wonderful explanatory graphic from Train me please about the premack principle

🐾 What if the thing your dog is obsessed with is actually your biggest training asset?

That's the Premack Principle in a nutshell — and once it clicks, it changes how you see the whole environment around you.

Here's the concept: behaviour that your dog finds highly rewarding can be used to reinforce behaviour they find less rewarding. You're not fighting against what they want. You're using it.

Grandma's Rule puts it best:
🥦 Do the less fun thing first → earn the more fun thing.

In practice it looks like this:

📣 Dog rockets back to you on recall → gets released straight back into the game
🚪 Dog waits calmly at the door → the door opens
👁️ Dog checks in with eye contact on a walk → gets to go investigate that smell

No food needed. The real world becomes your treat pouch.

This is one of those concepts that sounds simple but has a huge ripple effect on your dog's impulse control and their relationship with you — so I made a full video breaking it all down:
