A retriever named Cooper chased a tennis ball into the surf at a beach outside Ocean Shores, Washington. He swam straight into a riptide channel his owner hadn't noticed forming between two sandbars. The current carried him past the breakers fast, and every stroke back toward shore only cost him ground against the pull. His owner ran along the beach shouting for help as Cooper's head kept dipping under the chop.

A surfer named Ines Callahan was already paddling out past the break and cut toward him the moment she heard the shouting. She got an arm under his chest and turned her board sideways so he could grip the rail with his front paws, then paddled them both out of the channel at an angle instead of fighting it head on. Cooper coughed up seawater on the sand but stood on his own within a minute. Lifeguards posted a riptide warning flag at that stretch of beach the same afternoon.
