Meet Funny the Green Cheek Conure who was in recently for a lump on her back that was bothering her.
The decision was made to go to surgery and remove the lump, which Dr Nikki suspected to be a xanthoma, a benign skin mass.
The mass was removed and Funny came back for a recheck this week and she has done a beautiful job leaving it alone and it has healed wonderfully! 🎉

Calling all bird owners! 📣
To enable Biosecurity Tasmania to accurately monitor and notify bird owners of developments in the HPAI outbreak, it has been advised that all owners of companion birds, including backyard chickens, waterfowl, quails, emu, as well as those kept inside or in aviaries register via the QR code on the poster. It is a quick and easy registration that takes under 5mins!
Commercial poultry owners should fill out a separate form.

Whilst there is currently no crossover into domestic species, it is only a matter of time and anything we can do to track the spread and lessen its detrimental effects the better.

Random Fact Wednesday!

Did you know that the Blotched Blue Tongue Lizard is the only species of Blue Tongue Lizard native to Tasmania?
The mainland sees over 7 different species including the Blotched species!
In captivity, Blotched Blue Tongue Lizards can live up to 20yrs and females can give birth to up to 15 live young which are independent at birth.

Cleopatra and Toothless are two gorgeous blue tongues that were in recently for a health check😍

Meet gorgeous Miss Molly who recently presented at the clinic after losing some weight. She was in great shape but had lots of skin remaining around her bottom which had caused a skin fold pyoderma.
Molly was taken to surgery where Dr Nikki performed a gluteal lipectomy (butt lift) to remove the excess skin.
Molly came back for a recheck today and has healed beautifully and is catwalk ready! 💃

Adventurous Mimi the young Conure presented a month ago after losing a fight with a door and sustaining a fractured beak.
Dr Nikki was worried about the viability of the beak and the possibility of it fully breaking off.
Under general anaesthetic, pins were placed in her beak to stabilise it and she had a couple of weeks with a funny looking apparatus on her beak. She was also placed on a soft food diet to help with healing.
When she came back for a recheck the beak was still attached! The pins were removed and....
The beak was stable and had good blood flow! 🎉
Mimi will be transitioned back onto a normal diet now and come back for regular rechecks to ensure the beak stays stable and hopefully stays away from doors from now on 😂🥰

Darling 4yo guineapig Biscuit presented to the clinic a couple of weeks ago with a very large, palpable mass in her tummy.
X-rays were taken and a 'mass effect' was seen where all of her organs were displaced. It was difficult to tell what the mass was associated with, but Dr Nikki had a suspicion it was reproductive related.
Due to the huge size of the mass affecting Biscuits quality of life the only two options were surgery or palliative care. Biscuits owners gave permission to go ahead with surgery.
After beginning surgery, it became clear this was a very large uterine mass. With patience and many small, precise maneuvers, Dr Nikki was finally able to remove the mass! 🎉
A full hysterectomy was performed and Biscuit recovered well in the nice toasty incubator, started eating within an hour and went home the same day!
Biscuit came back for a recheck last week and has lost a whopping 350g, almost a quarter of her weight, and is doing wonderfully!
Yay Biscuit 🥰🐹
