It’s no secret that Horslyx are a favourite - not only for our horses, but all the other equids we often come in contact with!

When horses lick and chew they naturally produce calming endorphins so when we have a horse that has previously had a bad experience, does not always enjoy having their feet done, or may experience discomfort- their focus changes from one of a negative experience, to one of a positive outcome.

While horslyx are a tool of the trade now, we also carry a range in the car for sale direct to customers at a price competitive to the feed stores.

Why not add one onto your next visit like these boys did 🩷

I’ve always encouraged and promoted the use of multiple modalities for looking after our equine friends. I am so fortunate to have such a skilled group of friends who have chosen to upskill and continue to grow and develop professionally as the years have progressed!

Stacey from Thrive Equine and Canine therapeutics is without doubt no exception - her commitment to continuing professional development and learning with a great tool at hand is of fabulous benefit to equines, around the state.

You may have heard people talking about medkey, but what actually makes it so interesting for horses?

Medkey uses bioadaptive impulse therapy — meaning it doesn’t simply deliver the same treatment to every horse. It responds to the horse’s body and adapts as the horse responds. It can work through the coat, making it a gentle, non-invasive treatment option.

💫 So what can it help support?

🔹 Pain relief & comfort
Medkey is designed to support the body’s natural pain-regulating mechanisms and can be used to work with areas of discomfort and altered muscle tone.

🔹 Release muscle tension
It can help address areas of muscular tension, restriction and protective muscle tone — helping the horse move more freely.

🔹 Nervous system regulation
A horse’s nervous system plays a huge role in how it responds to pain, stress and physical workload. Medkey works with the body’s regulatory pathways and many horses become visibly more relaxed during treatment.

🔹 Movement & mobility
By working with areas of altered tone and tension, the aim is to support more comfortable, efficient movement and better weight distribution.

🔹 Recovery & rehabilitation support
Medkey can be incorporated alongside an existing rehabilitation or treatment program to support recovery following workload, muscular tension or injury.

🔹 Helps identify areas that need attention
One of the really interesting aspects of the system is its real-time feedback. Changes in the horse’s tissue response can help the practitioner identify areas of altered tone or regulatory stress and focus treatment where the horse is responding.

🐎 And perhaps most importantly — every horse is different.

Medkey isn’t about chasing a particular symptom or applying the exact same treatment to every horse. The horse’s response helps guide the session.

It can be a valuable supportive therapy, but it doesn’t replace veterinary diagnosis or treatment where a medical problem is suspected.

✨ The goal is always a more comfortable, regulated horse that can move, recover and perform at its best.

Rocky received medkey very soon after his paddock initial injury and I attribute the speedy intervention of the medkey to his recovery now. Today our little Coco had a go, and she looooved it. We’ve truly noted a marked improvement on all the horses that have been having regular and routine therapy sessions.

While Stacey comes up from Hobart, don’t be afraid to reach out - I’m certain she has another trip very shortly!

Working as a HCP it’s not always cost efficient buying ready made products to use everyday on client horses.

There are however some fantastic manufacturers of products that I recommend for use on pathologies between visits.

I’ve started to carry a range of some of the products I use and recommend in the car for sale direct to clients including Horslyx and wirebacked hoof picks.

It’s been hard to get into a solid rhythm - with moving house, a deep tear in my calf and of course the battles of every winter, the weather.

I’ve always said that while it may not be the hoof care providers job to train horses to have their feet done - as professionals it’s our responsibility to give them a good experience to set them up for future success with wherever they land.

Driven always by one of the best possible phrases “a little bit of horsemanship goes a hell of a long way”, a bit of understanding is always implied. Horses see us every 4-8 weeks, and each time the horse allows us the trust to take away their ability to keep themselves safe for a few minutes at a time.

Being present in your presence goes a long way, and the young horses that I continue to have the pleasure of working with are such reflections of this.

Today was one of the last times I got to handle the feet of a couple of spectacular young horses. Set up for success with a dedicated and committed owner, who like minded believes in giving them the best start, and best experiences.

I will miss watching these young fillies grow, but have happiness knowing they have had the best start for the next professional that comes to them.

Mud Grids Tasmania are one of my favourite solutions when tasked with the question “what can I do with this mud?!”

Mud grids not only reduce precious topsoil erosion and run off, but with proper use and installation they can also aid in soil stability, reduce slippage and restore structure in areas of high impact or high traffic.

Go chat with Ali and Steve at Agfest - and discuss the many ways mud grids can work for you.

We can't wait to see you at Agfest Field Days, Tasmania. Find us on MAIN STREET site M05B (near the southern entrance).

Apples are my favourite reference to horsemanship, and earlier this week I was reminded of it again. We have four apple trees, heritage species. All maturing at different times, all require one of the other as a cross pollinator. While picking a selection of apples from the trees, I found myself reflecting on the similarity and connection to horsemanship.

There are many, many Apple varieties. Some varieties work best for baking, some are more for eating fresh. Not everyone has the same taste, I myself love the fresh, crisp slightly tart zing from a pink lady, but others prefer the softer, more powdery flesh in a gala. Always somewhere there is someone working hard to develop a new apple variety, something new and exciting, but truly it’s still an apple.

Horsemanship practices are in theory the same. There are so many methodologies, trains of thoughts and programs, not one sole ideology will work without fail for every horse you meet.

Be open, be amenable, and be observant. Sometimes the apple may look good, but on closer inspection, there’s a grub hole on the side hidden from the sun.

Use the apple for the horse you encounter, don’t try and use a granny smith when a golden delicious will do.

With winter coats fast coming in, I find it timely to advise everyone that sadly I wont be available for clipping this year.

This is for no other reason then some current personal health qualms.

For everything else it’s simply business as usual!
