The Rainbow Bridge Vet - Launceston

The Rainbow Bridge Vet - Launceston The Rainbow Bridge Vet is a part-time business, currently open on a Monday Tuesday and Thursday 9-5, and Fridays 9-4. We can discuss your options before hand.

Occasional appointments available outside of these hours when time and energy permits. I am an experienced veterinarian with over 30 years of clinical practice. I have worked throughout Australia, the UK and NZ - Tasmania is where my heart is and is my long term home. One of the hardest parts of being a pet owner is seeing our fur-family get older. Unfortunately our pets rarely pass away peacefully in their sleep - and it is difficult to see them struggling or suffering. Although it can be a very difficult decision to make, allowing our furry loved ones to pass peacefully in their own surroundings is a relief to us as owners. Most importantly for our pets, it is a gentle and kind way to end their suffering. My service includes a phone discussion before a planned visit. This may help you decide when is the right time, or to reassure you about what happens in a visit. There is plenty of time in my visit - I allow for up to an hour. Afterwards you may want to bury your pet at home. Alternatively you may wish to have your pet cremated.

A beautiful gift from the talented Kate Keepsakes and creations by Kate

Thank you 🙏 for thinking of me.

A wee while ago I visited Kate and her family in their home to help them say goodbye to their beautiful boy Mako ❤️

This Creation by Kate really says it all
‘I crossed the Rainbow Bridge knowing that I was loved’

If anyone would like to share how they have chosen to honour the memory of their fur family that has journeyed over the Rainbow Bridge - I would love to see what made sense to you ❤️

I actually didn’t know who originally wrote the Rainbow Bridge Poem
I hope this bit of Facebook news is true!

Long before millions of grieving pet owners knew the words Rainbow Bridge, they belonged to one heartbroken 19-year-old girl and the dog she could not imagine living without.

His name was Major.

In 1959, Edna Clyne was living near Inverness, Scotland, when her beloved Labrador Retriever died. Major was the first dog who had truly been hers, and their bond was unusually close. When his life ended, Edna was holding him in her arms.

The next day, she was still overwhelmed with grief.

Her mother saw how badly she was hurting and suggested that she try putting those feelings onto paper.

So Edna sat down and began to write.

What emerged was a vision of a peaceful place where beloved animals wait until the people who loved them arrive, allowing them to eventually continue their journey together. She called it Rainbow Bridge.

Edna never planned to make it famous.

She eventually typed a few copies for friends who had been moved by her words. Crucially, she did not put her name on them. The copies were passed from person to person, slowly separating the poem from the young woman who had written it.

Then, in 1994, Rainbow Bridge appeared in Dear Abby.

The column reached an estimated 100 million readers, but there was a problem. Nobody seemed to know who had written the words that were making so many grieving pet owners cry. Dear Abby even asked readers to help identify the author.

Decades passed.

Then art historian and author Paul Koudounaris began investigating.

His search eventually led him back to Scotland and Edna Clyne-Rekhy. When he contacted her in 2023, she was 82 and still had something extraordinary in her possession.

The original handwritten page from 1959.

For more than six decades, countless grieving people had found comfort in words written by someone whose name they never knew.

And those words had begun not with fame, publishing or an audience.

They began with a 19-year-old girl missing her Labrador.

Sometimes something written for one dog becomes a way for millions of people to remember their own.

Sinead is offering home visits this weekend (sorry I didn’t share this earlier)
For those that have a pet that has declined unexpectedly and needs a vet sooner than anticipated 🥲

Urgent at-home euthanasia this weekend

I’ll be available Saturday & Sunday, 11am–6pm for urgent, on-the-day at-home euthanasia appointments.

This service is for families whose older or unwell pet is nearing the end of their life and cannot wait until the following week. Where possible, I can help your pet pass peacefully at home.

If you’re unsure whether it is time, please feel free to get in touch to discuss your pet’s situation.

If your pet is in significant distress or struggling to breathe, please take them immediately to the Animal Emergency Hospital Launceston rather than waiting for a home visit.

Please message River & Valley Veterinary Care if you need an urgent appointment this weekend, And please feel free to share this post with any friends or family who may need this service.

Thank you all for your patience and care.

I lost my Mum last week - and although it is huge hole in my world at the moment, I also recognise that the loss of our pet family can be just as devastating.
Its all grief and something we all bear as part of the journey of life and love!

I have still been doing a bit of work - and seeing the people that already had appointments. I don't want anyone to feel bad about this - its been strangely comforting to be able sit with those that I have seen, and bear witness to your love and loss.

Ok - enough of that deep and meaningful stuff !

I have some availability next week on Monday and Tuesday 27th and 28th July

The following week I am away on my 1 week 'winter break' so back to my normal schedule from Monday the 10th August.

For those that are needing a home visit to say goodbye to a member of your fur family whilst I am away there is a few of us out and about doing home visits.

Good morning

I have had an unexpected family loss in the early hours this morning, and will be on reduced capacity whilst my heart catches up with my head.

I am not taking on any new appointments over the next 2 weeks - but I do not intend to cancel anyone that is currently booked with me.

I will update here on my page when I am able to come back on board

Thank you for your patience.

I have finally officially launched my website! This would not have been possible without the very patient and talented Nick Brown, and team, at Kingthing Marketing

Still a work in progress but hopefully it will provide some useful information and help people find me. There are a few vets on the mainland with similar names such as The Rainbow Bridge Vet and the Rainbow Vet - and it has caused some confusion!

Thank you to everyone that has left me reviews on my page. If anyone would like to leave me a google review, this is the link! Thank you 😊

The photo below is Bella. This was my Mums dog that she rescued from a shelter 🥰
