✨ Four To Finish The Night Season ⚡️
It was the last night racing meeting of the season on Friday at Tasmanian Turf Club Inc. and for Trinder Racing we finished with a bang, landing 4 winners with the 9 runners we took to the track.
Our first winner was McVeigh (3g Stratosphere x Louise) who broke through for his first win in the 1220m Maiden.
Off the inside barrier, the gelding we call Louis began well and was able to hold the fence near the lead for the first time in his short career so far. He held his position despite being challenged wider on the track for much of the race, and was able to rail through strongly on turning. He kicked away on straightening and never looked like losing from there on, running through the line strongly to win by over 3 lengths.
McVeigh’s overall time of 1:14.34 was the slowest of the three 1220m races on the program, although he was only a couple of lengths slower than Aristopolos. Interestingly he ran the 3rd fastest 800m-600m section of the night in 11.66 seconds, which shows the work he had to do when challenged mid-race. The fact he could then finish his race off in 12.34 seconds for his last 200m - the 14th fastest on the program - suggests there was probably more merit to the win than the overall time may indicate, and it was pleasing to see him finish off as strongly as he did.
McVeigh - named after former Tasmania Jackjumper star Jack McVeigh - is owned by Leah Goodrick and we congratulate her on her success with a homebred who was born and raised on the farm. He picks up the Tasbred bonus here so with his first win at start number 4 he has already earned over $44,000. We thank Kelvin Sanderson for his winning ride as he executed the pre-race plan to perfection and came back with the desired result.
Leah had a second win in race 3 thanks to Just Bobby (4g Tough Speed x Fan Tan) who scored a strong win in the 1620m Maiden.
Also ridden by Kelvin, he rolled forward from a middle draw but found some unexpected speed underneath which left him caught in a three-wide position. He also wanted to overrace but eventually settled and relaxed despite racing wide and facing the breeze. After gaining that breather he applied pressure wider on the track as they approached the bend and straightened for home with a 2 length lead. Given the work he had done in the run he was entitled to lay down in the straight but he stayed on strongly and claimed the major prize by just over a length.
Just Bobby ran the 1620m in 1:41.50, which was considerably slower than the Class 4 over the same trip that followed. His best section was his last 200m which ranked 30th on the program on a night dominated by shorter races. His early move for home was reflected in his section from the 400m to the 200m being the fastest in the race, and his ability to stay on strongly to the line from there suggests the longer distances are well within his grasp moving forward.
We congratulate Leah and the other connections on Bobby’s first win at start number 6 after a pair of second placings. With another Tasbred bonus available on this race, Just Bobby has now earned over $47,000 in his short career. Thanks again to Kelvin for his winning ride - he didn’t panic when caught wide and utilised the horse’s strength to take the race away from his rivals. It was also great to see the colours of the late Barry Goodrick salute twice in a great night for the stable.
Our 3rd winner was the ever consistent galloper Magnaprime (4g Magnus x Fast Legend) who was too good in the Open Handicap over 1420m.
Magnum found the lead comfortably with Erica Byrne Burke in the saddle and was able to dictate the tempo in the small field. Erica continued to lift the tempo as necessary to keep her rivals from making up ground down the side, and he turned for home with a clear lead. Nicco The Greek challenged valiantly but Magnaprime kept him at bay to score by just under a length.
The overall time of 1:27.07 was clearly the fastest of the three 1420m races on the program by at least 4 lengths, despite being run at the slowest early tempo of the 3. Erica used Magnaprime’s cruising speed to continue building the pace down the side to his advantage, which looks to have taken the sting out of the chasers as Magnum was able to finish off in the fastest last 200m in the race. That sustained speed has been a strength of his all preparation and Erica has been rating him to perfection.
Congratulations to all connections on Magnaprime’s 8th win at at start number 17. His career earnings are now just a touch shy of $270,000, after being a $60,000 buy at the Tasbreeders - representing Tasmania's Thoroughbred Breeding Industry Magic Millions Yearling Sale in 2023. This was his 5th win this preparation and he will now enjoy a much deserved break. Thanks to Erica for her winning ride, which was her 5th on this gelding and she has won at her past 3 rides on him.
Our final winner was another consistent older galloper in Cherokee Dancer (5m Harry Angel x Bint Cherokee) who beat a small but talented field in the 1120m Benchmark 76.
From the inside draw Harriett settled with a lovely trail behind a good tempo. As the leader came back to the field on turning, Erica was able to drive Harriett through a gap on the inside and sprinted to the lead. The favourite In The Ocean was also finishing hard out wide but Cherokee Dancer drew away in the concluding stages to win by half a length.
Cherokee Dancer ran 1:07.76 in winning and once again she produced blistering late sectionals in doing so. She ran the fastest last 800m, 600m and 400m sections on the night, with only In The Ocean running a slightly faster last 200m. Harriett has always been capable of running home in slick time when able to settle behind the speed with cover and proved that once again here.
We congratulate owner Wayne Roser on his success with his $26,000 Magic Millions buy from the Adelaide sale. This was her 7th win at start number 25 and with an additional 9 placings, she has won over $163,000 in stakes. Thanks to Erica for her winning ride which gave her another treble, stretching her premiership lead to 23 wins. Last but not least, thanks again to Iron Horse Equine Nutrition for their support of our stable.
