Lara Dog Training

Lara Dog Training Weekly dog obedience classes, teaching manners and social etiquette for a well behaved family pet. Classes are fun and hands on, come along and try one! :-)

Our aim is to educate owners and their dogs so as to ensure a friendly, sociable and well-mannered family pet, which is welcome in the community. Dogs are taught correct behaviours and boundaries, so that they learn how to read social cues from other dogs and to respond in an appropriate way, and owners are educated on how to best handle their dogs in all situations.

⚠️ WARNING – PAPP Poison in Use ⚠️

PAPP (fox bait poison) has been located around the Barwon Heads Bluff area in the last couple of weeks. Extreme caution should be used when walking dogs in the area. 🐾

⚠️ Baits are highly toxic if ingested
⚠️ Can be moved by wildlife
⚠️ Areas are usually signposted, but pets can still find them

Fred was one of the lucky ones—after going for a walk in the area, he collapsed and was rushed to our emergency team. Thankfully, the antidote was administered in time, and after responding quickly, Fred is back home and recovering well

👉 If you suspect your pet has ingested a bait or is showing unusual symptoms, seek veterinary attention immediately. Early intervention can save lives

It's important to thoroughly research a breed to ensure you find the most suitable dog for your family or living situation.

An animal sanctuary is receiving up to five phone calls a day from dog owners asking, "Can you take my Maremma?" as they find the bundles of fluff become large dogs needing lots of room and discipline.

Times are tough, and sometimes important things get pushed to the wayside.

Your dog's behaviour can often dictate how much "out of the yard" time he gets per day and where you can take him, for exercise and enrichment.

Ok, at first glance, what do you see? Nawww how cute, right?

Let's look again, from the dog's point of view.

These dogs have not chosen this situation- it's been forced upon them.

The closer dog is trying to communicate its discomfort by using clear body language, not read nor understood by the human/s involved.

"Whale eye" - when the whites of the eyes are are showing.

Yawning.

Lip licking.

Leaning away.

These are all signs that the dog is very uncomfortable, anxious and stressed by the proximity of the chicks.

And THEN what happens? One of the chicks bites the dog on the tongue! The dog was right to be anxious!

So sure, I may be a killjoy for those who want to view this as "cute," but please people, learn to speak a dog's language!

(The last photo would have been a split second when the dog blinked - not showing him falling asleep with the chicks.)

PLEASE desex your pets. And get rid of the false idea that your female dog/cat needs to have a litter beforehand. Think of all the cats and dogs, kittens and pups that are in shelters around our country (the world!) without homes. These could all have been avoided if people desexed their animals.
