🐦 BIRD FLU – WHAT PET OWNERS NEED TO KNOW 🐦

H5 bird flu has been detected in wild seabirds in parts of Australia.

🐾 Help protect your pets:
• Don’t allow dogs or cats to touch or eat sick or dead birds
• Keep cats indoors where possible
• Keep dogs on a lead around areas where wild birds gather
• Keep pet food and water away from wild birds
• If you keep chickens or pet birds, minimise contact with wild birds and maintain good hygiene
• Never handle sick or dead birds — keep your pets away too

⚠️ Watch for unusual signs in birds, including sudden illness or death, breathing difficulties, diarrhoea, weakness, swelling or neurological signs.

📞 If you find sick or dead birds, don’t touch them. Record the location and report them to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.

If your pet becomes unwell after contact with a wild bird, please contact your veterinarian.
