Upcoming seminar on understanding canine behaviour and implementing problem behaviour modification techniques. This will be a 2hr Seminar that covers subjects such as understanding how behaviour works, what drives it, what continues to feed it and how you go about changing it. The second half of the seminar will be workshopping as a group through class participants own experiences with their dogs and problems they may be having. We will try and find solutions and hopefully all learn from each others struggles.

Good afternoon all.

We are now taking expressions of interest in our obedience / puppy classes starting Sunday 19th July. This is a 5 week program costing $160. I am a qualified dog trainer and canine behaviourist, so our classes cover elements of basic obedience, socialisation and also problem behavior management. TIP FOR THE DAY
Extinction bursts and resilient behaviours !!
When implementing new rules and procedures to eradicate a problem behaviour it is important to follow through with those new rules religiously. When a dog has been getting away with an unwanted behaviour for a length of time, then suddenly you bring in new rules / actions that prevent it, it is normal that in the short term the unwanted behaviour may actually escalate. This is called an extinction burst. It's because they know they normally get away with doing the unwanted behaviour and now that your preventing it they feel they need try a little harder to get what they want. This is where you need to follow through and be consistent, as normally the extinction burst is short lived. If you are inconsistent in following through with new rules, it actually can make unwanted behaviours more resilient. The dog learns that even though 80% of the time you may follow through, if they keep pushing the boundaries you will eventually give in.

TRANQUILA DOG TRAINING TERM 1 PROGRAMS
Obedience Class - 5 week program starting 8th Feb. A few spaces are still available.

Wayward Woofers Walk - This program is designed for people who are too fearful or embarrassed to walk their dog in public due to their dogs behaviour, whether it is reactivity, over stimulated or overexcited. Small groups of no more than 4. The program involves approx 3 x 1 1/2hr sessions, with the option to do extra sessions if necessary.
