Did you know that horses with gastric impaction are treated with Diet Coke?

It does an excellent job of breaking up the blockages in the stomach but can take several days. These cases are often mild colic cases that when re-fed the horses will often show colic signs again.

Historically, gastric impaction in horses has a poor outcome. A retrospectively study reviewed cases of gastric impaction to evaluate whether treatment with coke was associated with improved survival.

Of the 125 cases included, 57.6% were discharged from the hospital. Horses treated with coke had a greater likelihood of survival: 82.8% vs. 35.8%. Non-Friesian horses treated with cola had 90% survival.

Researchers evaluated whether treatment with cola is associated with improved survival in horses with gastric impactions.
