Frogs at Pelaw Main

Frogs at Pelaw Main A page about my journey keeping my own captive frogs, rescuing and rehabilitating native wild frogs, and about the wild frogs found in my area.

With lots of cute frog photos and videos along the way! Also on Instagram Frogs Main I am a licensed NSW Frog keeper and my wife is a Veterinarian. We are located in Pelaw Main, NSW, Australia. We are in the process of setting up several enclosures to legally house several species of captive bred native frogs. We also are making our property into a frog sanctuary to be home to as many wild

native frogs as possible. We have the facilities and knowledge to rescue and rehabilitate native frogs that need to be cared for and released, or relocated. This is a page for us to document and share our journey with frogs! Please contact us if you are local and have frogs or tadpoles in need of help; injured, or that need to be rescued, relocated, or rehomed. We will do our best to offer help and advice. We are affiliated with, and frog rescue and rehabilitation is done on behalf of, Hunter Wildlife Rescue. Please note that we are are private residence and not open to the public for visits at this time.

Who is this little guy?! 🐸

This is the Creaking nursery frog, otherwise known as the Inelegant frog and far from boring!

Following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Jasper in 2023, the Australian and Queensland Governments have committed $3 million to support the recovery and resilience of threatened species across impacted areas.

As part of this funding, JCU: James Cook University, Australia has developed an innovative project to establish a captive breeding facility and processes for critically endangered Wet Tropics frogs. This facility will play a vital role in trialling and refining the conditions, equipment, and processes needed to ensure the survival of these unique species.

Here’s what’s happening:
🐸 A quarantine and captive breeding facility is being set up to house frogs safely.
🐸 Common, non-threatened frogs with similar ecological needs are being collected to trial artificial breeding structures and simulated environmental conditions.
🐸 Captive husbandry and breeding techniques are being developed to prepare for future conservation needs.

Excitingly, the first frogs have already been collected from the wild and are currently in quarantine, awaiting their move into the new breeding enclosures!

This project is part of a broader initiative to support environmental recovery and stewardship following Tropical Cyclone Jasper. Together with JCU, we’re taking a significant step towards protecting Queensland’s unique biodiversity and ensuring a future for threatened species in the Wet Tropics.

Chytrid fungus has been linked to the extinction of 90 frog species around the world. In a long-abandoned Sydney brick pit, a new front has opened in the fight to save an iconic species.

This Green Tree Frog (Litoria/Pelodryas caerulea) came into care with Frogs at Pelaw Main on behalf of Hunter Wildlife Rescue via Animal Referral & Emergency Centre. It was assessed by our very own Dr Cassandra of Frogs@Pelaw Main (and Elder St Vets), and once healthy release where they were originally found. :) 🐸

Are you having issues with the new NSW record keeping system for privately held reptiles?

Representatives from the environment regulator attended the Penrith Reptile Expo asking for feedback on the system. The feedback will go to decision-makers on how to implement the system.

We're asking all NSW followers of the page with licensed fauna to fill in this questionnaire and provide feedback on the record system.

Feel free to share the post.

Thanks!

It’s World Frog Day!
Behind every frog call you record with the Australian Museum’s FrogID app is science in action, from mapping species distributions to understanding environmental health, and even helping taxonomists scientifically recognise species that were previously unknown to science. Thanks to your contributions, FrogID data has supported research formally describing 13 Australian frog species, and there’s still so much more to discover. Your recordings make research like this possible – thank you!
