🐾 Welcome Pickle! 💙

At just 14 weeks old, this adorable little Dachshund came to Small Paws for his initial assessment and to begin his training journey. We’re focusing on building a great foundation to help him grow into a happy, well-mannered little guy! 🐶

Pickle also met Miss Cheeky Face today, who is staying with us for a today and tomorrow. The two enjoyed a lovely play together, and I think Pickle may have just made his very first friend! 🥰🐾

Pickle will soon be joining our puppy classes, where he’ll have the opportunity to learn new skills, explore new experiences and enjoy safe, supervised social time with other puppies.

We’re looking forward to being part of this little guy’s journey and watching him learn and grow! 💙🐾

🐾 Today’s Group Class – Choosing the Right Equipment!

Today we discussed the importance of choosing the right equipment for different situations and how it can help keep our dogs safe, comfortable and set up for success.

🐶 Harnesses for car travel – helping keep our dogs safely secured while travelling.

🌿 Long leads for sniffing and exploring – giving dogs more freedom to investigate their surroundings while remaining safely connected to us.

🦮 Different leads and collars – understanding the options available and choosing equipment that suits the dog, the activity and the training goal.

🎒 Training treat pouches – keeping treats easily accessible so we can reward the behaviours we want to see. Timing matters! The quicker we can reward the right behaviour, the clearer we make it for our dogs.

It’s not about having every piece of equipment available; it’s about knowing what to use, when to use it and how to use it correctly.

Our equipment should support communication, safety and learning, not replace good training and an understanding of our dogs.

We also worked on:

👀 Focus work – encouraging our dogs to pay attention to their handler and build engagement, even when there are distractions around.

🐾 Social time – because learning isn’t all about training! The dogs also enjoyed time to play, interact and practise their social skills.

Fantastic effort from our owners and their dogs today! As always, we balance learning with fun, helping our dogs develop skills they can use in everyday life. 🐶💕

🐾 Today’s Group Class – Focus, Connection & Teamwork! 🐶💕

Today we worked on having our dogs stand or sit (their choice!) in front of their owners and make direct eye contact before being guided into a heel position beside them.

This exercise is all about building focus, encouraging our dogs to check in with us, and teaching them to pay attention before we move on to the next step.

🌟 Fantastic work by both our owners and their dogs! It’s wonderful to see everyone learning and working together as a team.

And of course, training wasn’t all hard work! There was plenty of time for some well-deserved play and social interaction, because learning should be fun too! 🐶❤️

Stella the Cavoodle popped in this morning for her weekly private playdate and spent some time with Elmo and Ace, who are visiting us for the day!

Positive interactions with suitable dogs help dogs learn to communicate, read body language and understand social cues. Spending time with different breeds, personalities and play styles also teaches them to respect boundaries and adjust their behaviour to suit their playmate.

Dogs learn to recognise when another dog wants to play, when they need a break, when to slow down and when they’re not interested in interacting. These skills help prevent misunderstandings and support more enjoyable social experiences.

Of course, play should always be safe, supervised and matched to each dog’s comfort level. ❤️

Harvey is rebuilding his confidence around other dogs, and it’s lovely to see him making progress! 🐾

It helps that Harvey used to come to Small Paws as a puppy, so he’s familiar with the environment and has some happy memories here.

Today, he even enjoyed a fantastic game of chase with Penny! 🐶 Watching him relax, feel more comfortable and rediscover the fun of spending time with other dogs is so rewarding.

We’ll continue to let Harvey take things at his own pace, building positive experiences and helping him feel safe and happy around his furry friends. ❤️🐾

At Small Paws, we don’t expect perfection from our dogs. ❤️🐾

Our goal is to help them become happy, well-adjusted, confident and well-mannered dogs who feel comfortable in their world.
We want them to learn, grow, develop good manners and make good choices, but we also want them to have fun, enjoy life and simply be the dogs they are! 🐶💕

Because being a good dog isn’t about being perfect. It’s about feeling safe, being understood, building positive relationships and having the freedom to enjoy life, one paw at a time. 🐾
