Found at Browns Depot Killarney.
Is microchipped but owner details are not updated.
Currently at the clinic and we have pulled a paralysis tick off him although he is not showing clinical signs.

Equine breeding season 🐴

Breeding season is upon us and here are a few things you can do to help smooth sailing when breeding your mare:

1. have your stallion contract and payment organised
2. Know where the stallion is standing & give the appropriate details to our team
3. Know how long the stallion is standing at stud for (some performance stallions finish standing at Christmas to begin their under saddle campaigns again)
4. Ensure your mare is UTD with worming & vaccinations
5. Ensure your mare is in forward condition and has a rising plane of nutrition leading into breeding
6. If your stallion is not standing at stud into January our cutoff for accepting mares for chilled AI is the 14/11/26 to ensure the best chance of achieving a pregnancy before Christmas shuts down semen transport

Ken recently came in for a 2in1 procedure: castration & repair of a small umbilical hernia.

Both procedures were performed under field general anaesthesia, with a closed surgical technique used to repair the hernia.

Whilst larger or more complicated hernias may require referral, suitable smaller hernias can be repaired by our team here at Killarney Vets.

Ken is recovering well post-operatively, and his owners are very happy with how he’s going! 💙

We love being able to offer our equine patients a range of surgical procedures, including some of the more involved cases, close to home.

⚠️ TICK PARALYSIS IS ON THE RISE ⚠️

We’re starting to see an increase in paralysis ticks in our area, so now is the time to make sure your animals are protected and you know the early warning signs.

Tick paralysis can affect dogs, cats and livestock, particularly calves, and clinical signs can progress rapidly.

Early treatment matters. Tick antiserum neutralises circulating unbound toxin, but it cannot reverse toxin that has already bound to its target sites. This is why we don’t recommend waiting to see whether symptoms worsen.

Check your animals thoroughly for ticks, particularly around the head, neck, ears, lips, under collars & between the toes.

Most importantly, make sure your pets & livestock are up to date with an effective tick preventative.

If you find a paralysis tick or notice any of these signs, contact us as soon as possible.📞

A bit of a tight situation… 😅🐶

Willa found herself in a rather unusual predicament after getting her head well and truly stuck inside a piece of poly pipe! We can only assume she was hot on the trail of something that she was chasing.

Unfortunately, getting her head in proved much easier than getting it back out.

Her owners had already done a great job carefully cutting through the pipe to free enough of it for her to move around, but things became a little trickier as they got closer to her head and ears.

With a little sedation on board, plenty of obstetrical lubricant, a few carefully placed cuts and some teamwork, we were able to pry the pipe open just enough to fold her ears back and slide her head safely out.

Thankfully, she was remarkably well considering her ordeal and was very happy to finally have her head back where it belonged!

CLINIC CLOSURE – NEXT WEEKEND

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Killarney Veterinary Surgery will unfortunately be closed next weekend, Sat 22nd and Sun 23rd August.

While the clinic will be closed and we will not have a veterinarian available on site, our phone line will still be attended by one of our veterinary nurses, who will be available to provide advice and redirect urgent cases to the nearest available veterinary service where required.

If your animals require routine medications, food or other supplies, we encourage you to please organise these with us before the weekend.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding.
