We have had 2 dogs present to Killarney Vets in the last 2 weeks in severe respiratory distress. The cause: migrating grass seeds!
Both dogs had severe pyothorax (pus and infected fluid in the chest cavities). Both owners were dedicated and opted to allow us to place thoracic drains and perform intense hospital management of their dogs. Thankfully - Teddy, who is pictured, is well on the way to recovery. Our 2nd patient is also on the road to recovery, although still early days.

Migrating grass seeds are a severe hazard for dogs. Because of their barbed design and sharp points, they only move in one direction. Once they pierce the skin, ears, eyes, or nose, they can burrow deep into tissues or organs, often requiring veterinary surgery.

Common Entry Points and Warning Signs
* Paws & Toes: Look for persistent licking, limping, redness, or a small swollen lump between the toes.
* Ears: Watch for head shaking, tilting the head to one side, or constantly scratching at the ear.
* Eyes: A red, squinting, or weeping eye is an emergency, as it can cause corneal ulcers.
* Nose: Sudden, violent sneezing or reverse sneezing could mean a seed is lodged in the nasal passage.
* General Skin: Look for small, raised lumps or open, weeping sores (often between the armpits or groin) that your dog frequently licks or chews.

Prevention: After walks through long or dry grass, always run a brush through your dog’s coat and inspect sensitive areas like under the ears, armpits, and between the toes.

Late gestation radiographs for Nala 🐾

Nala is a German Shepherd, approximately 8 wks pregnant at the time of this x-ray. With whelping just around the corner, foetal skeletons are sufficiently mineralised for us to estimate litter size by counting skulls and spines.
