We turned out this lovely batch of dark, well-matured , absolutely chocka with at the Derby Street in .

Now loaded into a wool pack, stored under salvaged hessian coffee sacks (to retain moisture), and ready for the community gardeners to help themselves to as we head towards Spring.

Removed a few plastic contaminants, but very little overall. It is always a good idea to . Great to see!

Lovely day for winter gardening: we took an electric barrow load of community compost for a ride along the river, then over to support our neighbours at Crossroads Community Garden in Footscray.

No one needs this in our compost! Please remember to remove your fruit stickers.

Either take them off at the shop (maybe find somewhere convenient to stick them), or take them off when you put your groceries away at home. Much easier than digging through soggy peels and food scraps, and much better chance they won’t end up as toxins in our local food systems for generations to come!

USCC has updated the most popular download on our website: the Benefits of Compost white paper.

This resource is perfect for sharing with compost customers, policymakers, and community members to illustrate the importance of using compost. We want to thank the Young Professionals Committee for their hard work in updating this important document!

You can head to the link in our bio to read and share the updated paper.

As community composters, we work to feed the soil for our local food systems. Every week we try to remove as many fruit stickers as we can. These don’t get converted back into plant nutrients like the food scraps they come attached to. They persist in the soil, get harder to remove with every year that passes, and ultimately are passed back into our food as toxic chemicals.

Please remove stickers and other plastic contaminants before sending your organics to compost.

What are you feeding the soil?

Kensington Closed Loop Project

The Compost Hub consists of compost bays, located at the back of the Kensington Town Hall building. Along with the Stockyard Community Garden and through the support of the community, we seek to create a closed-loop food system.

The City of Melbourne has provided a compost hub in response to community demand to process organic waste locally and thus reduce the amount of household food waste going into landfill.

Many residents do not compost at home due to a lack of space, lack of skills and/or living in medium to high density housing without access to home gardens. Compost bays have been installed at the back of the Kensington Town Hall to be easily accessible to the wider community 24/7.

Other benefits include: decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and producing a product containing valuable nutrients for vegetable plots and plant growth for residential or community gardens.
