They also need to be able respond to some basic cues such as (but not limited to):

🤔Do you know what is the difference between:

- a Dog Trainer
- a Dog Behaviour Consultant
- a Dog "Behaviourist" and
- a Dog "Behaviour Specialist"?

A lot and not a lot. Anyone without formal qualifications or extensive hands-on experience can call themselves any of the above and set up a business in the dog training industry that has zero regulations.

Just like I didn't know the difference between a physiotherapist, an exercise physiologist and a chiropractor, I did my research before asking for help with my health.

Here is a good article by Dogs Australia about some of the qualifications available in Australia "that the industry recognises, and should be a minimum for anyone charging clients for their services".

I could add some more good courses to the list that are teaching students modern, science-based, force-free methods (e.g. by the Karen Pryor Academy or The Institute of Modern Dog Trainers Australia), but the bottom line is, do your research before relying on website blurbs and Google reviews...

If you don't see any formal qualifications, ask questions to see if the trainer has your dog's welfare in focus, not just profit.

Well said! 🤕 Most bites happen because kids and dogs don't speak the same language and adults are not actively supervising - or managing - the interactions.

🐶 Now that we’ve got your attention with all these adorable doggos… let’s talk about something important: keeping kids safe around dogs.

Did you know most dog bites to children come from the family pet or a dog owned by someone they know, like a friend or relative? While dogs can be loving companions, young children are most at risk of serious injury from dog bites.

👧🧒 Teaching kids how to interact safely with dogs is key. Here are some simple rules to help:
✔️ Don’t touch a dog that’s eating or sleeping
✔️ Always ask the owner before patting a dog you don’t know
✔️ No pulling tails, grabbing ears, or sneaking up from behind
✔️ Never get between dogs that are fighting or playing
✔️ If a dog scares you, don’t run. Stand still and move away slowly
✔️ Never enter a yard or home with a dog unless the owner is with you
🚨 And most importantly: never leave young children unsupervised around pets.

Let’s keep our little ones — and our furry friends — safe and happy together. 🐾

When certain terms get out of hand and are still used as labels for behaviour - incorrectly.👩‍🏫

Dr David L. Mech, the research scientist who first referred to the breeding wolf pair as alpha male and female in 1970 admits that he is "very much to blame for the term 'alpha' being used with wolves". He says that "at that time that's all that science knew but we've learned a lot [since then]".
