Here's a photo from outside c**t 'Sparrow's first ride in a bridle. I always do the first few rides in a halter, and once the horse is confident at the w/t/c I'll slowly introduce the bridle on the ground and over the halter, so by the time the horse is ready to be ridden solely in the bridle they are already soft and understanding of what is being asked of them. 😊

This video is a bit longer than what I would typically share but I wanted to show some behind the scenes leading up to the first ride. Please note a lot of work has gone into preparing this filly to mentally handle a rider, I've only shown a handful of clips.

Some first rides look really boring and simple and I don't ask for much other than what they can offer. I take what I can get - every horse is different, no two are the same. My entire method is built around trust and progressing at the horses own rate.

Slow and steady wins the race! My favourite quote is

Some photos from when outside horse ‘Buddy’ and outside pony ‘Skittles’ learned to face up/give two eyes + two ears in the roundyard. This is one of the first things I teach a new horse.

For a horse to learn to look to you when they feel pressure, instead of running away - is the foundation to everything they will learn both on the ground and undersaddle. 🌟

Some snippets of outside gelding ‘DJ’ as he begins to learn to soften up to a rider.

He has taken a lot of time, patience and consistency to be fully accepting of being ridden without any anxiety. Still lots of work ahead before he is finished, but I just love when all the pieces start coming together. I'll be sharing more of him as he begins to finish up his time here with me 💫

Mentally preparing a horse for their first ride is so important & desensitizing especially with the saddle can make a huge difference on how they react to having a rider on their backs.

👉🏻 Teaching a horse to switch the thinking side of their brain on instead of the reacting side is the most valuable lesson they can learn.

Photos are from a first introduction to the feed bags/bottles prior to the first ride, and she didn't have much to say about it apart from the first 3 photos. Super level headed filly!

Thank you for these gorgeous photos Keepsake Collective ❤️
