One of the highlights of my recent professional development journey was the opportunity to spend time learning from some incredible leaders in veterinary reproduction.

After a fantastic week at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga, I flew to Melbourne to undertake an externship with renowned theriogenologist Dr Stuart Mason (boarded specialist in Theriogenology) and his reproduction team at Doncaster Veterinary Hospital.

I am incredibly grateful to Stuart and the entire team for their generosity in allowing me to observe, learn and participate in such a wide variety of fascinating reproductive cases. During my time there, I was fortunate to see everything from paediatric intussusceptions and ovarian remnant syndrome cases through to planned caesarean sections, timed artificial inseminations, and semen collection and processing for freezing.

What stood out most from both of my recent externships was not only the depth of knowledge and expertise within the team, but also their willingness to share that knowledge and mentor others in the field.

Experiences like these are invaluable and help ensure I can continue bringing the latest knowledge, techniques and evidence-based reproductive care back to my patients and clients.

A huge thank you to Dr Stuart Mason and the entire Doncaster Veterinary Hospital reproduction team for making me feel so welcome and for sharing your expertise so generously. It was a privilege to learn from you all. 🐾❤️

🐶 FUN FACT ABOUT CANINE OVULATION 🧬
Did you know dogs are actually quite unique compared to most other species when it comes to ovulation?

Most mammals ovulate mature eggs (secondary oocytes) ready for fertilisation immediately.

Dogs, however, ovulate IMMATURE eggs (primary oocytes) that still need another 48–72 hours to mature before they can be fertilised.

Even more interesting — ovulation usually occurs a couple of days AFTER standing heat begins.

This is why breeding timing is so important and why progesterone testing plays such a critical role in canine reproduction.

Accurate timing helps determine the optimal
breeding window for: 🐾 Natural mating 🐾 Fresh AI 🐾 Chilled semen AI 🐾 Frozen semen AI / TCI

Breeding too early or too late can significantly reduce pregnancy success rates — especially when using frozen semen where timing is extremely precise.

Canine reproduction is far more complex than simply breeding during a heat cycle! 🐾
