PARVOVIRUS OUTBREAK PERTH

There has been a recent spike in cases of the deadly canine parvovirus in Perth. With hotspots also common in Geraldton it means Jurien Bay dogs are at risk especially being a holiday town.

What is parvo?
Parvo is a viral disease that attacks the gastrointestinal system of dogs. It has a rapid onset and makes dogs sick very quickly. Parvovirus is shed in faeces and urine of dogs carrying the virus and can last up to many months in the environment (parks, roadhouses, backyards) and on surfaces such as shoes. The virus can be fatal particularly in young dogs.

What are the signs?
Lack of energy, severe vomiting and diarrhoea (often bloody) and loss of appetite. Often younger dogs are most affected, however older dogs can also contract the virus.

What should I do if my dog has any of the above symptoms?
Contact your nearest vet. Please phone ahead as suspect cases need to be isolated. Your veterinarian can perform a diagnostic test to diagnose parvovirus. Parvovirus can be treatable but success relies on early diagnosis and treatment. Due to the severity of the virus, dogs often require intensive hospitalisation, medication and intravenous fluids for multiple days.

How can I protect my puppy?
Vaccination is the most effective way to protect dogs from parvovirus. Puppys should begin vaccinations between 6-8 weeks of age and receive 2 further boosters until they are fully immune. Limiting access to public spaces and unvaccinated dogs is essential in stopping your puppy coming in contact with the virus until they have completed their vaccine course. At each puppy vaccination, your veterinarian will discuss what access to dogs and environments is appropriate for your puppy and its immunity status.

How can I protect my adult dog?
The core vaccination adult dogs receive annually covers parvovirus. Ensuring dogs are up to date annually is the best way to protect your dog or we can perform a blood test called a titre test to see if your dog has immunity.

We understand in the recent years following the COVID-19 outbreak that many pet owners have become vaccination hesitant concerning their pets. Please know the vets at our clinic are willing to discuss your concerns in an open and understanding way and we can address the potential side effects and efficacy of the vaccination. Parvovirus vaccine is strongly encouraged by vets because the vaccine is up 98% effective in preventing parvovirus. Parvovirus is such a devastating disease to witness and treat and no veterinarian wants to see an animal go through that.

Congratulations to our amazing Kristina Martin for completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing! Kristina is now a fully qualified veterinary nurse!

Kris has been with WVS Jurien from the very start and has worked tirelessly for the past 6 years studying her vet nursing on top of work, raising kids and working with her husband in their business. Kris is the most compassionate and kind nurse who has a drive for learning and improving her skills. We are so proud of you and so glad you’re a part of our team 🩵🐶🐱

CASE HIGHLIGHT - Caprine Dorsolateral Shoulder Subluxation (Dislocation):

Our patient Buddy a domestic goat came to see us last year following a forelimb lameness after getting stuck in a fence. After examination, sedation and x-rays it was revealed he had dislocated his shoulder. Following a period of traction under sedation to stretch the muscles and ligaments Dr Coralie was able to replace the humeral head into the correct location. This required a lot of strength from Dr Coralie as the shoulder had been dislocated for some time and was difficult to replace (as seen in the picture). After the procedure Buddy had a specialised Spica splint placed to prevent the shoulder dislocating again while the joint healed. We are very pleased to report that he has made a full recovery and is living his best goat life back at home causing mischief with his friends 🐐🐐🐐

A big welcome back to Dr Hannah Morcombe!! After some precious time on maternity leave, we’re so happy to have her back in the clinic. She has been greatly missed by both our team and our furry patients!

A very friendly pink and grey galah has been found today in Jurien Bay. The bird has an identification ring on its leg.

Hi everyone, my name is Ocean! I’m currently in foster care in Jurien Bay, waiting for my fur-ever home!

Nature
I was a young mum… but truthfully, I’m still a kitten at heart myself. Tiny in size, mighty in devotion, and very proud of the seven little sea-sprites I’ve raised.

I may be petite, but I’ve done an incredible job raising my babies and now it’s my turn to be someone’s baby. I adore pats and cuddles and will happily “meow” for attention, rewarding you with wonderfully loud purrs. I’m gentle and affectionate, and if my girl Sunny and I could find a home together, that would be the sweetest happily-ever-after.

Companions (Children, Cats & Dogs)
I’m very social and used to life in a big, busy kitty family, so I’ll need a feline companion in my forever home. That could be your existing friendly cat, or perhaps you might consider adopting me with one of my babies.

I haven’t yet met small children or dogs, but with slow introductions and gentle supervision, my Foster Mum believes I’ll adapt beautifully.

✅ Crunchy biscuits for snacking
✅ Kitty companionship and snuggles

My PURR-fect home would be one where I am safe, adored, and never short on cuddles or full tummies. I’ve given my all to raising my babies. Now I’m ready for a loving home where I can relax, be cherished, and maybe stretch out in a sunny window like the little queen of the tide that I am.
