WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PUT A HIGH-ENERGY DOG WITH ANOTHER HIGH-ENERGY DOG?
I meet a lot of very high energy dogs that are 'Bats**t Bonkers.'
A popular option to help sort out the dog's crazy ways is to get another dog it can play with and expel a lot of that energy.
'Don't do it'.
I will tell you why.
Let's take a real-life example. And this real-life example is typical.
We took on, and gave a home to a crazy nine month old, three-quarter Standard Poodle x Golden Retriever from a lady in her eighties who couldn't handle him because he was totally out of control.
He peed and pooed on the carpet at will, knocked everyone over, stole any food whether it was in their hand or not, Etc., etc. He did everything bad a dog could do.
A year and a half later, he is near perfect.
I run him a lot on the bike, and we walk him, as well as providing the structure and discipline he needs.
A couple of months ago, I saw another elderly client who had a nine-month-old Kelpie x GSP.
Same problem: a nice dog going crazy with boredom and an owner who couldn't physically discipline and provide the things he needed. Lovely dog, but bats**t crazy.
We took him in and got in touch with 'Ark' at Southern Downs Rescue to find him a home
and agreed to foster him in the meantime.
What has happened ...and it happens every time... they played with each other like mad all day and got exhausted.
Great, they were tired and worn out, so they behaved well.
Then a couple of weeks later, 'Shadow', our dog , started to pick up bad habits from 'Rocky ', the foster dog.
All the dog behaviours they like but humans cannot live with.
If we were going to keep him, it would be hard work for us, and we are both professional dog trainers.
High energy dogs need a huge amount of exercise, But not crazy exercise like they get in a dog park. That just feeds the crazy part of their brain and makes them fitter pains in the arse. Faster to get away from you and get up to mischief.
They need, and should get structured exercise like bike rides, hunting, running 10km with their owners, walking around agility courses. swimming. Think going to the track or Gym. It settles your mind.
Many owners say they cannot do those things. I say 'Yes you can'. You chose a German Shorthaired Pointer, The world champion Bikejör dog for speed and endurance. {Bikejor is when a dog pulls you out in front on a bike while you ride like mad as well}
All those exercises calm a dog's mind as it lets off steam.
Even throwing a ball down a steep hill instead of on the flat will calm your dog's mind as he comes back up to you. Walk off lead in the bush or woods. Let your dog be a dog at times.
Think about exercise as a calming tool. Not as a way to let the madness out with more madness.
Anyway...We have taught Rockie recall on the whistle, house-trained, jumps in and rides great in the car now. Doesn't jump up on us, leaves the cat alone, walks well on the lead, doesn't steal our food, and comes back instantly when off-lead in the bush when whistled.
He still needs an owner who will carry on with that discipline and exercise him a lot because he has the genes that need a massive amount of exercise and a crazy mind .
If you are up to it...Give Southern Downs Ark a call.
